Does fixative reduce graphite shine?

HI
I seem to recall reading somewhere where a suggestion was made to use a fixative to reduce the shine left by hard pencil work. Is that the case? If so will workable fixative work or should I purchase a different type?
I have sprayed a piece with 2 light layers using workable fixative and it didnt change the shine at all.
Thanks in anticipation, Lyn

Re: Does fixative reduce graphite shine?

I dont use fixative to reduce the shine, i use it so my work isnt as likely to smudge and for that you want to use non workable fixative which will also make you drawing appear alittle darker.

Re: Does fixative reduce graphite shine?

Lyn, I dont know whether its of any use but I used vine charcoal over the graphite background on the moonlit horse pic I did and that reduced the shine a lot.

Do try it on a test piece first though as some people find that using charcoal over graphite doesnt work, personally I found that only the vine charcoal worked but that did work pretty well.
