Heya Tina, I don't think her arm is as green as you think...slightly, yes, but it isn't too bad. It is fixable. Sap green is pretty warm, it is a curious choice to cool off the arm...personally I would have gone with a cool purple. You can wipe a layer off as long as the paint underneath is dry. At any rate, I think you have done a *superb* job with her. She is just lovely.

Hi Jessica. I never would have thought of a cool purple to cool the red, I just thought green would neutralise it a bit and sap green being transparent was a good one. This is why I moved to this forum, to learn stuff like this. I can muddle through up to a point but when it goes wrong I get a bit stuck. Anyway, thanks for your encouragement, I am very stubborn and dont like to be defeated so I may finish her yet!

Hello Tina, you can be proud, your Delilah is beautiful! The skin looks luminous and she has an interesting introspective look on her face. The hand is beautifully painted.

This is how the skin on my young woman looks after a scumble in a reddish skin tone (mainly venetian red, white * black). I only had time to do one arm up to now... I will leave for a vacation tomorrow so I will not post any progress until end of July. I am determined though to finish it.

Susanne

Susanne this is really stunning!!! Gorgeous. I venetian red.
Tina, the green will dull the red but not necessarily cool it off.

Thank you Jessica! I am glad you like it. I was surprised how well this works, the ochre just barely shimmers through this cooler pinkish layer. I think it is good for this fair skin type.

Which Venetian Red do you use? This color is so different between brands. I have one (Schmicke) which is difficult to use because it is extremely staining, and also rather cool. Then I have one from W&N which is perfect, more orange and really beautiful in mixes.

Susanne, I have a pretty nice collection of earth reds....my venetian red is from Gamblin, the synthetic one. I also have a natural venetian red from Maimeri which is transparent. I mostly use the Gamblin, which is very powerful. That's one reason I use the transparent red oxide more for skin tones, but they both work well.

Another earthy red i love is OH Flesh ochre.
I'm here waffling on and i did a color chart of my earth reds here...not shown is caput mortuum, which is an amazing earth purple and perfect for shadow skin tones.

When you layered the flesh, you had a yellowish layer, then you glazed the venetian red over? It looks lovely. Skin tones are so easy to mix with earth colors.

Re: May-June Painting with the Masters 2011: Alexandre Cabanel

I want to QUIT!
I spent at least 4 hours today applying and removing colour. I could rarely see any typical skin colour on her, so it was red and green and blue and purple and yellow and her chest looked like a butterfly. Also, I am not used to these dull colours that I can see in the shadows. And her hairpiece is too complicated and sometimes I cannot understand what I see...
So Delilah has some similar effect on both me AND Tina. I am not really frustrated, I like her glowing skin and... ok, I like her glowing skin. Especially when I use the camera flash to take a picture . I may try again tomorrow in daylight.
Tina, don't be so strict on yourself. I like your Delilah, she has the right expression. I also used sap green on the hand, if this makes you feel better.
Can you explain to me what is the glowing oval thing on the hairpiece over her left eye? I almost broke my head to figure out what it was by looking at the original, then i left it out. Why isn't there one on the other side?
Can u send another photo of her when she dries a little bit?
Susanne, finally the jaundice girl is getting cured Wish I had ur patience. The satin on her dress looks amazing.

Jessica, my Venetian Red is Miameri, and I have a great Mars Violet Deep from W&N - it is great for flesh tones.

Hello Everyone,

Everyone has done really good work - - yet still we are all
critical of our own work ! I guess it's what keeps us improving !

I really like both Delilahs - don't quit !
Susanne, your lady looks splendid, I'm looking forward to seeing
the final stage.

Here is the latest on my monk - it's a hodgepodge of several
different stages [ and some odd colours at the moment ].
I've just softened the hairline and beardline
- will softly darken them again - right now , he looks 10 years
older and rather cross !
Have also started the ear and robe etc.

Patricia

Patricia, your cross monk looks amazing.
My Delilah is resting at the moment (maybe forever) and I am troubled. This is a "painting with the masters" thread and what did I do? No likeness, no original technique, no face tilt, no dramatic light... All wrong.
I like her, but it doesnt look like a Cabanel. I hope you don't mind.
