Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

I'm so excited! My bijou boxes arrived today! (I bought two because I'm going to change one into being gouache.) They're half the size of my previous "pocket" watercolor kit (the smallest Koi one).

I think I'll go out sketching this afternoon. Or maybe right now.

No worries, Jamie! I ended up adding some to a Jerry's order, which should be here today, so I'll try it myself. It was so cheap, I couldn't resist!

Great way to re-purpose something, Rainy.

Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

Ooooh, that's dangerous, Tina!

I've played with the Lukas gouache a little, and think it's a great value. Not as nice as the M. Graham or Schmincke, but very nice for the price. MUCH better than the DaVinci ones I tried. The Lukas have nice body and intensity from the tube, and they rewet in the palette decently. They also thin well for washes, yet have good opacity used at/near full-strength. If someone is looking to try gouache, they would make a good starter.

I bought mine from Jerry's http://www.jerrysartarama.com/discou...rs-gouache.htm on sale, and paid under $3/20ml tube, but regular price is just $3.39 and they have sets.

One note--the color swatches on the Jerry's site are nowhere near accurate, and since most are made from multiple pigments and the names mean nothing, I found it hard to predict what the color would be!

Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

I'm getting a chance to play with some of the leather I got, and. . .

Oooh, oooh, oooh! Some of the leather I got matches the Pelle Burnt Cognac color exactly (that's what color my medium Pelle is)--it's gorgeous.
http://www.jetpens.com/Pelle-Leather...-Pages/pd/8721

Plus, I think this is roughly the same color as the 5th anniversary Midori http://www.thejournalshop.com/acatal...on.html#a15055.

I've made my own version of one of these customizable notebooks with a flap cover, since I prefer flaps. (This one is in a cordovan color, with a bit more finished surface). The flap does add a bit of bulk, but it does add protection for the contents, and I was able to incorporate a pen holder. I'll take a picture and post it.

Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

Okay, here are some pictures of my refillable journal. It's the size of a medium Pelle, (7x4.5") has a wrap-around cover with an adjustable pen holder loop integrated into the tie.

I made it a little thicker/wider through the spine area than the Pelle/Midori versions to better accommodate my tendency to overstuff this kind of thing. So far, I'm loving it!

Great refillable, Leigh. When do you start taking orders?

Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

Oh wow. It's beautiful. I LOVE this. (Is that a vintage Schaeffer Craftsman fountain pen, btw?) I have some old pieces of leather that I might be able to turn into one of these. But I don't have a Pelle or a Midori, so I don't quite understand how the signatures are attached to the leather. I've looked at the pictures on JetPens, but the elastic structure just hasn't clicked in my brain.

Could you perhaps show a closeup detail of what you've done?

Until I can take more pictures, here are a couple of links that might help:
http://www.comfortableshoesstudio.co...knock-off.html

http://www.comfortableshoesstudio.co...-off-idea.html

The leather needs to be fairly thick--5 oz. or about 2.5-3 mm thick.
Oh, and the pen is a Eversharp Symphony with a broad flex nib.

Hey, it's a possibility--I seem to have gone overboard on obtaining leather, and have enough to make MANY more of these .

Re: Supplies while sketching/journaling - version 2

Thanks, Leigh. Those videos were perfect. My leather is pretty heavy -- I bought it for making belts and bags a long time ago when I did Ren Faires. (Okay, no laughing. I did Ren Faires because I loved costuming and it was the only place I could wear the stuff I made!) Now I just have to find that box in my storeroom...

That's beautiful, Leigh! The pen as closure is a nicely integrated touch.
