It's so great Leigh.

I just want show my participation
Since Leigh has done the Head of a woman perfectly, I don't want to try it cause it will be obvious that mine is worse

Please be gentle It's 70x60 cm and the classic problem is 'SKIN TONE'

Need to dry it a little before I try to fix and add some yellow colour and lighter value, cause if I do it right away, the oil paint seems sliding and cannot attach to the underlayer.

Re: APRIL Painting with the Masters 2011 - Cecilia Beaux

SuniTri: Don't be afraid to try the Head of a Woman- NO ONE would ever paint if they were afraid their stuff didn't measure up to others. This is a learning experience. Did you always have the best grades in school? Did you care? No! (Well- maybe you did, but Id didn't, I was too busy doodling on my papers.)

I think you have a nice beginning. Keep your shadows warm and pay close attention to your values and you will get it right. The color is not so important as the value.

Does Warm shadows mean I need to apply reddish colous? When and where do we need to use warm or cool shadows Nora? Is there any basic rules about it?

Sunu , check out the forehead and cheeks , patches of orange (very warm) look how the rim of the hat warms with pink and cooled in areas with the violet

This rule applies to all portraits inside only. Warm shadows always- add red or burnt sienna or cad orange to your mixtures. Stay away from white in the shadows. In the light the skin will be very representative of the color of the light. An incandescent light is warm- throwing goldish light on the skin in light, while a window light is cool, casting bluish shadows on the subject in light.

Outside it varies a lot because you have all kinds of reflected light from the blue sky and there are so many other things to take into consideration like time of day, that careful observation is needed.

Typically these portrait artists working in the late 1900s used cool north light on their subject when they posed the because that type of lighting is consistent and does not change throughout the day.

I think you did a nice job on your girl- the nostrils might need a bit more delicate shaping.
