The Flying Manta

This was a very difficult painting to scan, since the range of colors is limited, and my scanner sometimes can't dfferentiate between shades of green-blue. It's pretty close, though.

This painting is derived from an old series of sketches I made about 4 years ago... it's interesting to work from an idea you had in the past, so for the next few weeks I may work solely on old sketches that have't materialized.

The only non-watercolor parts are the small dots thar represent stars... those were made with one of those weird oil-based opaque markeres from Japan.

I hope you like it, comments will be welcome.

Hi Loki...this is a very interesting image...I think you have achieved a wonderful sense of depth in the landscape, including the clouds and sky....there is a 3D effect.
The manta not does quite achieve this same depth and could be 'modeled' a little more perhaps to strengthen it.

I like the curve of his tale and the way the light bounces off of him. I also like the mix of transparent and opaque colors.

Many neat qualities, but the dark sky and clouds do it for me. I agree that the manta's modeling might not be the same degree as the rest of the piece. From the works of yours that I've viewed, I enjoy greatly. Mystic.
