Daniel- who looks a bit like Jesus

He says that people tell him he looks like Jesus all the time.... this is just the view I ended up with... which is oddly reminiscent of a really popular painting of Jesus by an artist whose name I can't recall.

16" X 20' oil on linen

2.5 hrs from life. I need to warm up his left cheekbone but I am waiting until it is completely dry.

Great job! You got a lot done for 2.5 hours. I wonder if subject's left side hair also would be more in shadow with some darker tones ?? Hard to say because of other ambient light, so just curious.

Nora, I love all of your work. It is so fresh and lively. This is a very good portrait from the live model, also in 2.5 hrs time. It shows that you have been consistantly doing this.Very nice.

I guess we should just be glad you didn't paint him in white robes, Nora! This is a beautiful painting and you have some great color harmony happening here!

Nora - nice work and fast! It seems to me that the light direction is quite clear - from the upper right and shadows fall to our left /his right and is reflected in the volumes here. Good human shapes and good color/form thinking for such a fast work!

I like him! He'd have been better than Mel for a Jesus movie.
You could even give him a halo.
The hair is beautiful, nice work for a live model yes!

Re: Daniel- who looks a bit like Jesus

The anatomical correctness is so faultless it projects a real portrait from a sketch. Two and a half hours? I couldn't do that. Whether or not this is a likeness of the model, it is a reality illusion of SOMEBODY on canvas. In shape, line, expression, bulk and solidity of attitude, you got it. It might sound silly or patronizing to point this out, but putting the head and torso on a 16 x 20 rectangle with balanced surrounding space, in a timed live pose is a mark of serious self teaching and learning.

There are strict limitations on how far you can go with light and color in thick direct painting - what ever hours. Sparkle can turn to mud in a stroke. Light and shadow here indicates you know what you are doing and where you wanted to go in limited time. Sooooooo, what more? Keep us posted.

Great work from life in a short time frame! I like how you've kept good focus on his features and shirtfront and a nice color harmony.
