Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
Below are two photos. Select any of the two and use it as reference to do your painting. Remember what I taught you in the water course. Do not create flat water planes that normally appear in lakes, so I added some sunshine in one of them. The sea picture needs a subtle crashing wave for interest. Good luck! See you next Saturday.

Re: Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
Joh you ve done your best finding these difficult photos to paint. A challenge!
Lot of things that arent correct on the photo, melodic lines, protrusions, rail road tracks, colours etc.
Good luck to all!
Joh did you photoshop the gradations in the water in the first photo?

Okey dokey... vary the "squares," get rid of the bullet train lines, don't let the water shape and sky shape compete, stay outta the no fly zones, don't paste on the cloud shapes, keep the value of the water different from the sky and that's just the beginning. A lot of stuff to remember here. Think I'll try it in pastel--it's such a forgiving medium...

Yes I photoshopped the light in the water as a reminder not to paint a flat rectangle. I wasn't concerned doing a real good job at it. It is extremely rare to find a photo that will give you almost the perfect composition. All paintinggs will need tweaking and chnages. Only once I have I found a photo that you can almost take a face value in all my years. It was an angle of "Crowfoot Glacier" in Banff. Remember photos are only to give ideas no to be copied.

Re: Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
I am one of the lucky ones to attend Johannes's art class at his studio. We painted the two skyscapes of the images posted in this thread. Johannes is a great teacher and I have learned a great deal. I hope to post the paintings we made on the forum soon.

Re: Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
A few of us paint at Jo's studio where he gives a workshop. It is an awesome opportunity to paint with a master painter. Jo is able to supervise each one of us and gives instant feed back. The atmosphere is tremendous and I must confess inspirational. How else can I explain that we paint for 6 to 7 hours straight!!!
I wanted to post images of the paintings we did today ... realized how hard it is to take photos of a painting and keep the color balance, hue etc ... hopefully I will be able to get some decent images and post these soon.
Thanks,
Parvez

Re: Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
Here are the two paintings using the photographs from this thread as references. Note: You may see some brush strokes reflected as a result of the way the reflected photoflash hit the canvas.
Thanks,
Parvez

Re: Essentials of Painting Skies- Homework Week 1
Great Pictures. I will have to use colored pencil (a chalange for me lol) as I can't get to my studio to get different supplies.
