I tried the white gesso and hated it. I switched to Bob Ross black and love it. Its all I use. I would like to find another color that is as smooth as the bob ross. Utrecht has an Acrylic pint jar that I was thinking of trying. then paint with oils.

......Wayne.......

I'm not Leo, but I just started two 48" x 48" and one 48" x 60" pieces on Duron.

It's weird how even they are too small sometimes, when I step back. This is about as big as I've painted. Some of this will be egg tempera work.

Bri, are you bracing it in some way?

no bracing.......

.....or cradling for these.

I have a tempera that is 14" x 42" and it, when held in center, wants to have about an inch warp, but it takes just a wisp of effort to straighten it. The simple act of fitting it in a frame will suffice for that size. In other words, the light warp that exists is not a rigid warp if you take my meaning.(?)

So this is my direction, no cradle, but one can be fitted in the future if something occurs. there are a couple options.

I will not pretend to be any kind of seasoned expert in the large painting category. Most of my work is small, which is the result of drawing in school in notation margins. These are hyooj undertakings for someone like me.

I'm confused which side to paint on. Do I want to gesso the smooth, slick side, or the rough backside. I thought it was the smooth, but now that I put my gesso on the front, I put an X of gesso on the back rougher side, and that side looks more to me like canvas. Do I have it backwards?

I just tried using the rough side and it was very enjoyable. It's quite a bit different than the shiny side, more canvas-like. Its bargey.

FYI ...
top of the line duron is smooth on both sides and dark in color (not to be confused with panel board which is smooth on both sides but is more of a cardboard than a hardboard and has a cardboard type of color).

.. the next one down from the top of the line duron is smooth on one, rough on the other and lighter in color. No, they are not the same board with a different finish; they are a different type of hardboard .. a little less quality (according to the rep who sells the stuff).

However, that said, if one uses the second type of board, a few coats of gesso and one can use the roughness as a texture similar to canvas or other .. there are no rules .. you paint on what you want to.

cheap

They're really cheap-I'm really cheap-I wouldn't get them if they weren't a great deal. The11X14 are less than ($10.00 I think).

You save on not having to buy the paint, sealers, etc not to count the time.
