His parents were English but he was brought to America by an uncle when he was orphaned.

I don't know but turtles seem resistant to aging and live long lives. A turtles life is slow, also when their is danger near, they may retreat to their own little world as they are protected by the shell they wear.

I wonder what would a turtle do in its "Idle Hours"?

I don't know about the symbolism of turtles. I do agree with Dave's thoughts. And I think most of their hours must be idle ones. Maybe they spend them contemplating the faster moving creatures around them.
