Three Pears
I painted this one many years ago (probably 15 years ago). I needed to take a photo of it, so I thought I would post it here also. It is under glass, so the photo was a challenge. It's much sharper IRL, the glass definitely affects the photo . The colors are also much richer, I can't believe how difficult it is to get it right with the glass.
Anyway, I'm pretty sure I used all Giraults on this, on some kind of sanded surface. It's small, only 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". I did this when I was in my "super-realistic" stage. I think I paint a bit looser now, sort of an unconsious evolution I guess. C & C is always appreciated, though I won't be changing this one. I can always use your comments on future paintings though!

Re: Three Pears
Beautiful! I love the purple in the shadow from the stem. Somehow that makes the painting sing for me. Maybe you were just starting to loosen up and didn't know it yet.

Re: Three Pears
This is a little gem Chris! Your paintings now show more confidence (IMO), but I also like your more "intellectual" approach. I love to paint pears too, and I love Girault pastels.

Re: Three Pears
Beautiful work, Chris! Pears are unbeatable as subjects for still lifes, it seems (as well as eatin' ). I agree with Donna that the purple shadow under the stem just adds something really special to the painting.

Re: Three Pears
Mike,
Thank you. It is a favorite painting of mine, for several reasons....
Pete,
Thanks very much. Yeah, three's not a crowd when it comes to still life.....
Donna,
Thank you. That purple part is a favorite of my sister's too. I do think I was starting to be more adventerous with color on this painting, way back when....
Marina,
Thanks very much.
Deirdre,
Thanks very much. Unlike we humans, oh the ageing process.......
Karen,
Thank you. I love painting them.
Chuas,
Thanks very much. Giraults were my first purchase of 'serious' pastels, and they are still a favorite of mine. I just wish they weren't so pricey, or at least a little bigger..... I do have lots of them though, so I don't have to replace any yet!
Sonja,
Thanks very much. I think they are favorites because of both their shape and color.

Re: Three Pears
This is gorgeous, Chris. I like your realism style. Beautiful rendering and congratulations on getting the photo given your problems with the glass.

Re: Three Pears
I really like this Chris, you have rendered the pears beautifully and in a very classical way. Just gorgeous!. John

Re: Three Pears
Chris, it's no wonder it's under glass already. Stunning. I like the dark neutral color in the background and the simplicity of the piece.
