Painter 11 questions

I went and bought Painter 11. TwistedBrush was good but some things bothered me. I see a lot that I like better in Painter, but I have a few questions.

When the rulers are visible, it doesn't show my cursor position on it. Is this normal?

How do you manage when you want your reference picture on the screen?

I was looking for a good rake or fan type brush for painting grass. A couple look good but they are sideways and I can't figure out how to turn them. I thought with a program like this that would be possible. What am I missing?

Re: Painter 11 questions

I'm not too familiar with rulers. I'll have to look.

It really doesn't handle reference and image very well. This is one thing I've complained to them about. I have dual screens and I can't use one for the ref and the other for the image without "stretching" the screen across both. It should handle dual screens more elegantly.

I usually keep a small ref in the lower left corner and a big working image on the right.

Another option I've tried is to open my reference in another application -photoshop and display it on the other screen.

Another method is to create a layer with the reference image and hide/reveal it as needed.

I have issues with the same sort of thing with pallet knives ... they only work one way as far as I can tell....silly... I'm sure one could create a custom brush to do this but I've not tried.

Probably doesn't help much....

There are tons of free custom brushes - just type in brushes for Painter11, And you'll see lists.

Re: Painter 11 questions

Hi,

the following picture show my 'set up' with a reference photo. Maybe it helps.

It seems that it is a 'feature' of painter not showing the position of the cursor on the rulers

Cheers....

Wolfgang

Re: Painter 11 questions

That's too bad about the rulers. But I did figure out that if I open the info palette I can at least see my position in the coordinates which can be helpful. It will just be trickier if I need something to be a certain size within the picture.

Also too bad that brushes can't be turned. That is an option in TwistedBrush. If only we could take the things we like out of all the programs and put them together, lol.

I guess I will have to look more into creating brushes.

Thanks for that Wolfgang. After thinking about it, that's what I figured would work.

Re: Painter 11 questions

I think I found a good grass brush in case anyone is interested. Oils - Opaque Flat with feature turned up to 14. It turns with the direction you tilt the stylus, at least on an Intuos.

Re: Painter 11 questions

I was looking at the brush creator but I would need a lot more time to figure it out. But I did just paint some grass in my last picture and I think the brush I found worked well for me.
