Pricing of art
I have set up a poll with the intention of giving a general range of price suggestion for those interested. It is my intention to make it a sticky if successful. This is a multiple poll so you can click each that apply.
If you don't sell reproductions please DO NOT vote for them as below.

Re: Pricing of art
I'm a little confused on the inches... Is this the longest dimension for two dimensional work? Also I assume you are considering hand-pulled printmaking as originals?
Want to be clear before I vote...

Yes Longest dimension, and hand pulled prints are originals.

Re: Pricing of art
I had considered doing it by medium also, but that would be a lot of categories. It may also be too confusing for us all.
I hope this will at least give a ball-park figure for new sellers to consider.

Re: Pricing of art
This is a great poll because I have been going crazy trying to come up with the right price range. I will be glad to see the results of this.

Re: Pricing of art
Thanks for clarifying... It felt weird because I have so many categories in the under 12" for my woodcuts and then bigger numbers for the paintings...

Re: Pricing of art
I still have some questions as regards to mediums. I work in colored pencil, which is labor intensive...and yet the value perceived by the public is that it should be priced less than oils.
Are the prices here reflective of only oil or acrylic paintings?

The perception of the public may be based on things different than what kind of labor goes into the creation of a piece. It could be that it's on paper or framed in a way that they may not like, etc. Every medium can be labor intensive if the artist chooses, especially when you get into making your own panels, layering with various mediums, etc.
I've worked with colored pencils in a photo-real mode and while working that way is time-consuming, I wouldn't say it was any more labor intensive than any other medium I've used. It all depends on how detailed or involved a piece is. I know that works on paper seem to be priced lower (for a whole host of reasons, the main one being longevity) in many galleries.

Re: Pricing of art
This is a good poll, my prices are on the lower side. I have everything between $10.00 (ATC/ACEO) and $400.00 (24 x 36)

Re: Pricing of art
Forgot to add-- I am a non/semi-professional. I sell my work online with fair success, but it is not in galleries and I don't make a living off of it.

To set up a poll with media specific pricing would be far too large and unweildy. As a rule CP, Pastels, hand-pulled prints and Watercolours are seen as less valuable in a lot of cases, these will probably be on the lower end of the averages, My idea with this poll is to give a quick snapshot of prices for those just starting to sell. We regularly have new members asking questions on how much to charge, I hope this poll will give them a rough idea.
I know it won't be perfect, but it may be helpful.

Re: Pricing of art
To itallart,
I wasn't refering to colored pencil work being more labor intensive than any other medium. I was instead, refering to my own work being labor intensive.

Re: Pricing of art
Thanks, Greg,
I do appreciate getting the info on this thread as a ballpark. I guess it's a good place to start and judge works on paper from there.

Re: Pricing of art
Thanks Greg,
I am at the semi-professional stage, and really needed some comparison for starting out selling in oils. I won't vote in the poll as I think it should be established artists voting, but I charge between 150-400 euro currently depending on size from 12" x 16" up to 16" x 24". I generally don't paint larger, yet! I am really just starting selling so want to price with that in mind, but don't want to undervalue my work, as it also drags things down for us all.

Jim, giving your price is just as important as the established artists' prices. The idea is to get a cross section, both from established and emerging artists, part-time, whole time, hobbyist and anywhere in between. Most established artists know what to charge, the idea of this poll is so we can provide figures and averages for those with little idea of where to price their work.
