Project Discussion: Triad Challenge
A new project has been announced in the WetCanvas! project system!
Title: Triad Challenge
Project Leader: madmum
Relative Difficulty: Irrelevant
Type Restrictions: Painting
Medium: Watercolor paints
Subject: Not Applicable
Days open for signups: Always
Maximum participants allowed: Unlimited
Description:
How many different colours do you have on your palette? 10? 15? Well this project is an exercise to prove you don't need to use all of them in your paintings!
Have you any idea how many different colours you can create from just 3? I challenge you to choose 3 colours from your palette and paint a scene/floral/portrait (or whatever takes your fancy) of your own choice with those colours. If you just HAVE to use one different colour in a small area, I'll let you off, but that is the only exception!
I've found a few sites which describe the concept of painting with triads, please have a look. I've also included my own triad painting as an example, which was completed using alizarin crimson, ultramarine and aureolin. I did cheat and used perm. rose on the little girls coat! Please don't copy this, it is purely an example. I want to see your own triads! When you upload your entries, please include in your description the three colours you used, and tell everyone whether you found the challenge easy, hard or average, and why.
That's it from me, now get painting!
Additional Information:

Remember, in order to help keep the discussions on projects organized, you should post your questions, suggestions, and comments on submitted work here in this thread. By doing this, we allow other non-project efforts to not get "pushed down" by a swarm of project-related threads.

Whenever is fine Doug
Pam, I'm happy to wait till you come home - as long as you join
Lynn, good to have you on board, I think you'll find it an eye-opening experience once you see just how many colours you can make by layering or mixing just 3

This should be interesting. My eyes are soooo... blurry from the detail in Chinatown so a nice fuzzy floral is right up my alley.
Pam, I will miss you!!!! Hope you won't be gone for too long.

Very nice winter scene, you got a lot of different hues from those three colors.

I'll give this one a go.
Actually, I often only use four or five colours in a painting anyway, so it shouldn't be too hard. My initial sketch for the shells project used a palette of just three colours (yellow ochre, Prussian blue, alizarin crimson IIRC). The hardest things will be choosing a subject to paint
and finding time to actually paint it.

Ruth.... I can hardly keep up with the number of projects here and you've started a new one?!!!
I haven't even started on your shells project and have just started the mountain project at class.... and with Chinese New Year just less than 2 weeks away.... I'm sorry but I'm afraid I've to give this one a miss.
But... (this is a BIG BUT)!! Ok... perhaps I could eventually join up in late February... is that alright?

Marvin, it's open-ended, so no time-limit on joining or submitting I just think it's an interesting exercise to get people thinking about mixing colours

Carol, these colours worked very nicely together. The painting has a nice feel to it. I wonder how the colours would mix if you wanted more colours than the 3 you have here?
