Hints/tips on painting something so it looks like gold?

Believe it or not... I want to paint this Egyptian headdress on a dog. Yeah, a dog. (don't ask!)
But, how do I make the headdress look like gold?
Any suggestions for paints to use? Techniques?
I'm not sure I want to go so far as to use interference paint, but...

I reckon if you choose your colours right you should be able to do it. Remember shiny objects have dark reflections which enhance the shine.

Rhody,

I would make sure to do a very accurate line drawing to begin with. You will need to experiment with some of the lighter yellows/browns for your first washes. I think the key is to work in small sections, starting with wet washes. The darker your washes become, the less water you use, because you want to be able to control the darker washes with more precision. Pay attention to the highlights of the metal areas and leave them almost white. Make sure that your dark values are dark enough, to as Doug accurately pointed out, enhance the shine (highlights).

As far as colors, I know that gold has some raw umber/burnt umber mix. I did some brass once but I don't remember the yellow colors I used. You'll need to experiment.

Good luck on this one.

Tom

Sorry to trot this out again, but here's a link to my first brass painting with a link to a Chrome class and WIP.

Here three sites on using non-metalic paints to give the look of metals in painting miniature figurines.

Good luck with it! I'm sure all the great advice given here will help.

All I can add is .... labeling the object as being gold brings up a mind-set which will interfere with your creative process. Don't worry about whether it's gold or silver or whatever. Simply paint it as you see it. The results will amaze you.

It really is hard not to ask about an Egyptian headress on a dog. So I won't, but it is hard not to........

Karl, and others:

Here's what got me thinking about Egyptian dogs (see link).

It's my first WDE (pick an image from those offered, paint/draw/whatever for 2 hours and post what you did).
Be sure to look on the 2nd page of posts to see the finished version AND another version I did...

I've started my new painting. Or at least I have colors chosen and some frisket down on the paper. Cross your fingers for me!

May I suggest Hansa or Azo yellow ,a pale yellow , Cerulean Blue and Turquoise as the colors most seen in Egyptian sculptures and paintings .
