Question Travelling

Hi guys!
I am leaving Malaysia in a few weeks. A friend of mine gave me a streched 3'x4' canvas while I was here and so I went for it and started a big lotus painting. I have finished the 1st layer and it seems dry. Now here comes the question: how do I transport it???!!! This friend says I can unstretch it, roll it up in or around a carbord roll (which I can get at a cloth marchant)and restrech it when I get to my destination. Has any of you ever done that? Will it affect my painting? I am a bit worried
Please advice!
Satya

Are you sure the paint's really dry? Is your first layer fairly thin?

I expect someone more knowlegable will come a long in a minute but I as I understand it: yes, what you propose is perfectly possible. And you should roll the painting around the tube with the image facing out not in.

Thanks for your reply.
Yes, my first layer is quite thin. Anyway, I don't have much of a choice to carry it. So I'll give it a try and let you know how it went. I'm crossing my fingers!
Any other suggestion, anyone?

Rolling it up for travel is fine enough, but be sure to put wax paper on the surface (NOT TRACING PAPER!!!).

YOu might want to check out the mailing tubes..they are larger in diameter than the fabric tubes (unless you have a really large one). Roll the canvas with the painting to the outside loosely and insert into the tube. This will travel safer with you.
