Re: What are you listening to?
Alas Ovid, I think the Greensleeves is misascribed! General consensus seems that it is Elizabethan in origin.....Not that Henry VIII didn't absolutely rock; my favourite of his is Pastime with Good Company. Cool lyrics. And a youtube clip! The Jethro Tull version is also worth a look....

Re: What are you listening to?
To many to mention; of late though Melody Gardot and AC/DC during the Bon Scott era, but rest assured ask me in a month and answer will be completely different.

Actually, I think this is closer to the iconic version, by Red Ingle and the Natural 7 (my grandaddy gave me a 45 of this when I was around 2...)

Re: What are you listening to?
I listen all day to Pandora or my iTunes at work and I guess it's mostly "alternative" with a little bit of this and a little bit of that thrown in. A mishmash. Everyone from The Acorn and Beach House through to XTC and Yo La Tengo.
But my true obsessive love these days is Nick Cave and has been for a few years. He's been around as long as I have and is a great wordsmith. Perfection to me. He's dark and funny and usually pissed off. He doesn't tour the US often but he happens to be doing that RIGHT NOW and I'll be seeing him this weekend at the House of Blues in Boston. Really, I'm squealing inside like an annoying 12 girl year old girl (Like, OMG! OMG!).
Can hardly focus on real-life stuff and ain't that a big pity?

Around the 16th century, various forms of Greensleeves were floating around, both in England and in Europe. Perhaps Henry VIII created one of these, but as far as I know the tune isn't original with him. He seems to be one in a long and venerable line of people with great talent and, er, not such great personalities... ;-)
I'm guessing his version of the song went something like this:
Alas, my love, you do me wrong,
To cast me off discourteously.
For I have loved you well and long,
Delighting in your company.
Chorus:
Greensleeves was another wife
Greensleeves caused me such endless strife
Greensleeves to the block I sent
Her neck ever slightly to be bent...

Re: What are you listening to?
brian - like the variation,
But re. the date, the tune itself was first licensed to print in 1580 (the version we generally know best in 1584), and Henry died in 1547. If it had been popular before 1580, it would have most likely turned up as a ballad sheet, and because it isn't all that scurrilous, it would have been legally licensed. (By 1602, it was popular enough to be referred to by Shakespeare, who was consumate at playing off popular culture)...So I figure it's most likely post-Henry, though melodies & variations on them do float around for centuries.
Kevin... - thanks! One of the things I love about C&W is the way it can produce good but humorous music (as well as poke self-deprecating fun at their genre, but that's a different story....). Richard Capehart - the Washington Post writer - has a pretty funny suggestion to help John Boehner & Barack Obama get along - the Cigarette Caucus (both are smokers) - so I'll suggest this might be their caucus theme song:
Tex Williams and Smoke, Smoke Smoke that Cigarrete
======
Speaking of songs that might just help people get along, I heard one of my favourites yesterday on the radio, so I thought I'd post it here:
Lili Marleen .
That version is by Marlene Dietrich, the original by Lale Anderson is also very good, but very different in tone. The story of its popularity with troops on both sides of WWII is fascinating. English lyrics are on that page as well.

Re: What are you listening to?
'Whirling Dance' by Chung Yiu-Kwong for flute and orchestra.
I can't stand most C&W, maudlin rubbish for the most part. But there are exceptions. The Topp Twins are hilarious and the older stuff (closer to it's bluegrass and folk roots) can be pretty good.

Most Country and Western is "country" in name only. In reality it is but pop music sung with a southern drawl... with perhaps the added advantage that the lyrics deal with more mature concerns than the average pop song. Overall, however, I tend to agree with you and prefer the "country" music that is closer to the true Appalachian Bluegrass roots... which itself is rooted in English/Scottish/Irish folk music and ballads.
Currently, I'm listening to Michael (not Joseph) Haydn's choral music... specifically his Requiem Pro Defuncto Archiepiscopo Sigismundo and Missa In Honorem Sanctae Ursulae. (That's one of the great things about Classical Music... the great catchy titles! ). Micheal Haydn was the brother of the far more famous Joseph... but it seems he was a rather brilliant composer in his own rite. His symphonies and choral music are being rediscovered as part of the current HIP (Historically Informed Performance) movement which has focused upon appropriate manner of performing older music... as well as an exploration of many forgotten composers. The Baroque is no longer thought to be limited to Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi and the Classical Era is no longer thought to offer nothing beyond Mozart Joseph Haydn, and early Beethoven.
