Oh Kathy!

You will be making my head swell!!

I am pleased you found the step by step instructions easy to follow...it was a bit difficult trying to break it down into logical steps because I am not a logical person. I often sit and make a load of wire stems...or a batch of flowers and mess about doing what I feel like at the time!

Porcelain Roses/Flowers

These are absolutely amazing!!!! I just have to try them. I have a craft store and sell items that I have made. Could you tell me if they are in any way harmful or dangerous after made. I have to be so careful with that sort of thing. I saw that you said instead of using the poisonous material you can use Hydrogen Peroxide. . .is this more safe????

Now. . . .if I can do it. ..that is the question!!! lol

Thanks a bunch,
Dina

These would be harmful if injested...apart from the adhesive and the peroxide or Formol they also contain oil paint which is toxic. However as a household ornament they are varnished and are in no way dangerous.
I hope you manage to make them and look forward to seeing your results.

Porcelain flowers

Gina,

I thought I would post this message here so that all can view what "not to do". lol

I tried the roses, but . . . the only thing I ended up with was wire covered with floral tape stuck in a pot and one very big mess .

As you can see, I guess I dont follow directions very well. lol

Ok, now to find what I did wrong so that it doesnt happen again next time.

First of all, the mixture was thick before even putting it on the stove. Could this have been from the wood glue I used. Should it have been white wood glue??? I used Elmer's Carpenter's Wood Glue which is yellow. Then when it was put on the stove, I couldnt detect a color change, however it did get very thick.

When putting on stove should it be on very low heat??? About how long should it take???? And what color change am I looking for??

After it was done, it just stuck to everything. The only way I could even touch it was to use lotion, but I had to use so much that it changed the texture of the mixture, making it so mushy that it couldnt even be formed to a ball.

Well, there it is. If you can offer any more information, I would greatly appreciate it. I would love to try it again. I have so many ideas with what could be done. If only . . .

Well thanks in advance for all of you help. Have a great day!!!

Dina

Hi Dina

The carpenters glue that I use is white and the consistency of single cream...and when you put it on wood joints (or anything else) it dries transparent. Sorry I don't know the brand you named, it must be a brand from your part of the world. If I were you I would speak with a carpenter!
The mixture if you follow the amounts is not thick before you cook it...incidently I use the microwave but it leaves a smell! If you can imagine cooking a thick mix of cornflower this is what it is like, and once it starts to thicken I goes into a stiff ball and read from recipe for the next stages. I use an old dish to cook the mix...if I leave it to soak for a while it cleans up O.K.!
Look forward to your next results turning out well.

Gina,

I did it!!! I think it turned out right tonight. I used regular Elmers all purpose glue, for those of you who might want to try it.

However, my roses need alot of work. lol But, I will keep trying!!

Thanks again.
Dina

Re: Porcelain Flowers

Gina,

I work with pregnant teens and and we are constantly challenged to remove any potentially dangerous chemicals and make safer substitutions. Any thoughts on what could be substituted for the Formol as well as the possibility of using less toxic mediums in place of the oils?

Thanks in advance!
