Acrylic Attempt

You are doing great msue. It is bit late now, but I would have prefered the flower to be further away from the center.

Did you enjoy painting with acrylics? What is your usual medium?

Henrik--Most of my work is in watercolor, lino-prints, and collage. I also have done a few pastels. I do seem to have a "center" problem. I tend to just start painting and forget to plan the composition. This painting is alla prima (love those tutorials with definitions)

That was first thought too - not to put the flower in the centre, I do like this though, good contrast between the water and the lilly.

I purchased a starter set of acrylics. This is my first attempt. 9x12 canvas board. Painted all with one filbert brush (didn't want to use my good watercolor brushes). Had to mix greens and grays with limited 6 color palette.


Guess this is misleading. On reflection I have painted with acrylic...craft paints. These are my first "artist" acrylics in the tube.

hi msue..great start with acrylics..i really love the handling of the leaves..very painterly...the flower though looks completely different...different style. i don't mind the placement of the flower because there is enough interestin the background...but the light sources are too mixed. the flower should be a little flatter and disappear in perspective just like the leaves do. if the light is coming from slightly behind...paint the back petals in your whites and warm peaches and the front petals a little cooler bluish purple. since this is acrylic and sooooo forgiving you can give things a try without worrying. nice job

msue, this is a wonderful first with your acrylics! I couldn't think of how to tell you to crop the background and make your flower really stand out by making it the main focus of the painting...so here's my best attempt at showing you.

First I made the flower more dominant by adding petals..also highlighting the edges of some of the petals you already had painted in...and added more color to the center of the flower to keep it in perspective. Then I just cropped it to make the flower really look bigger than it is.
I wish I could get the realistic look of leaves the way you did.
