Don't see much that would be unorthodox about this painting, but it definitely is magical!
I keep looking for a unicorn horn
Very nice painting and I especially like your handling of the light filtering through the forelock and mane. Gives it a halo effect.
Wonderful :P
Hrm, are poppies okay for a horse to eat? Can't help wondering if they are toxic or not.

I love it! Very different. It looks like a watercolor to me (I work in watercolor) the way those colors run together. I especially like the way he's standing on the side of a hill and I am not sure how you accomplished that feeling with very little background space but its there. I also love the perspective. Like we are sitting down in that field of poppies enjoying the day with him.
(P.S. him eating the poppies is what makes it magical -- turns him those psychedelic colors !

One of my favorites of yours. Indeed there was something magical going on as you were painting this.

This is very magical. I too was imagining it was a unicorn. Hey, could be! Wonderful Ginette.

Thanks everybody for your vote of confidence.
I am not sure if the horses actually eat the poppies, but I do know that in various European countries, including Spain they do graze on fields of poppies.
I am planning on doing a similar painting again.
Thanks

I guess what I thought to be somewhat unorthodox is the perspective and the environment.
Most horse paintings I see are more traditional... Horse Head.. or Horse in action in sport...
Thanks for the great feedback.

This is a pleasure to look at - i wish i had that kind of imagination The light through his tail is particularly well done.
i hope you dont think I'm being too picky but i get the feeling that the background poppies were painted on after the horse was complete because there is a "poppy free" edge around the horse. perhaps it would be possible to paint poppies to the edge of his legs and disapearing behind them? Then you would have a clearer impression of the horse being in front of the background - what do you think?

Actually not picky at all rather well observed.
I knew from the beginning that I would paint the poppies in there, but after applying a light green coat I drew in the horse and gessoed it. Then I did the background. I was afraid if I get too much green or even red from the poppy sin the horse area, It would somehow show through. This was my first painting of this kind. Now I think next time I just paint away in the background and apply gesso over the areas that I want to cover later, or I just have to be more exact when painting things in later... like getting the to the edges etc. better. Sometimes I paint like a mad person, it all depends on my mood.
My blood pressure goes up and I get so excited that I lack patience. Other time I can fiddle with stuff for ever.
The thing about this painting is, that it is one of those, where fixing a problem is really not important, because the mistakes or problems are part of it's innocence and charm.
I have learned from it, for my next one.
Thanks for the input.

Might I say that you, Ginette, are very wise and someone who knows when to say "quit".

Thank You, Roan. That's one of the nicest things someone said to me in a long time.
I am very flattered.

Ginette,
This is lovely! I am going through a cropping stage myself - so I really like the composition here.

Thanks Mayet,
The unusual composition with the back cropped is also part of what I like about the painting.
One of the post mentioned about the feeling of sitting in the grass close to the horse, observing.
That is exactly what I wanted that kind of feeling. I also wanted it to give the feeling of a peaceful summer morning.
