Broken Board

well all, i broke my board recently. i've been waiting for this to happen so i could paint on it. i plan to do so soon- but i have never worked on wood paneling before. i like the look of the surface- it's small, 7.75 inches by about 9 inches tall- and it has jagged edges... only thing, i really dont want to paint on it and then find out i screwed it up somehow.
im only posting this question here, in the ab contemp forum, cause i dont feel comfortable posting anywhere else really. the basement has become my home just as much as the rest of you....
so any advice on how to keep the wood from warping, changing, or screwing it up? from anyone who has worked on wood paneling before?
I'd really appreciate the input- i promise to post when it's done.
thanks in advance.
