Thank you! Energy, that's Max! He's one of those very excitable Dobermans -- even when he's standing still he looks like he's about to explode -- and I wanted to instill that energy into this painting.

I do have something wrong with his eye. Not just the fact that the pupil is too far up, but there's something "missing" from his eye. It's an expression of -- explosion -- that he always has that I didn't quite capture and I don't have a good enough picture of him to see it there. I wish I knew how to show it. Any suggestions?

This is my first Dobie. I've done a few black lab paintings -- not my favorite subject, I hate black dog coats -- and a few collies.

What kind of bird dog are you doing?

Hi Roan, I am no expert on dogs....but I find he looks a bit too calm here for a doberman...has that sleepy eye look..I have taken the liberty here to open up the eye more...lighten the values and isolate the iris and enlarge the pupil ..to give a more alert appearance.
What do you think?

I am not sure what the breed is called that I must paint...not very knowledgeable on dog breeds really...I think its a hanshi...large brown dog with a nose the same colour of the coat....beautiful animal.

You rule, Darrell! That's exactly the alert look I was looking for. I doubt I'll be able to capture the "explosion", but more alert is a very close second.

Thank you!

Thank you, Sandi!

I hate painting black dogs. Ugh.
