Weekly Drawing Thread - August 23 - August 29

Welcome to the Weekly Drawing Thread for August 23 through August 29!

Each week a new thread with a reference and suggestions for that reference will be posted for anyone to draw and post their results throughout the week. You may follow the weekly suggestion which will be a loose guideline to try or draw and experiment on your own and post your results. Some people look on it as a challenge… but that's the great thing about these 'challenges' - they aren't against any other artists...the challenges is to you....to do YOUR best against yourself! So it doesn't matter what other people do, as long as you do your best!! Better still - do it consistently, so that no matter what is thrown at you, you attempt it...that's the challenge!

When posting you should consider adding information such as medium, support, dimensions, whether complete or not, so it will be easier for others to comment on your work.

The goal of this thread is open-ended. This means you decide what it is you want out of a weekly challenge. Do you want to just sketch or do you want to become more proficient at drawing, or do you wish to break into other drawing mediums or just play around? It is entirely up to you as the artist. You know your own strengths and weaknesses and you can find them in each reference we are faced with. Practice is where it’s at, just think of this thread as your personal motivator.

Any level of drawing is encouraged to join in!

Two Reminders: Different mediums are fine as long as we post preliminary drawings, sketches, and "under-drawing" of the painting, so the discussion on the thread stays relevant...and be sure to post the final painting for comparison of your drawing. Drawing can be crucial to the final product of a painting and we would like to see how!

We accept submissions for reference photos! Feel free to PM reference photos or links to one of the moderators or guides of images out of the image library that you would like to see here or upload your own photos...but be sure to keep in mind photo quality and size and choice of reference. We put all submissions in order of their arrival in our PM In-boxes. If you have anymore questions regarding this, feel free to PM one of us. Thanks!

This week we will look at doors and stairways.

Wonderful references! I'm going to attempt to do my first WDT this week, I love the first and last photo but will probably start with the second. We'll see how this week goes and if I get a chance to I'll give it a try . Definitely saving them for later at least!

I guess I'm the first this week, I'm usually near the last. Just a quick broad stroke exercise. Didn't come out too good, (understatement) I might try for a more refined version later. It's a little smaller than 8x8, 4B 3mm lead in a clutch pencil.

Re: Weekly Drawing Thread - August 23 - August 29

I did the staircase once. Today I had a bit of time before lunch hour was finished and quickly sketched this one with Mitsubishi Hi-Uni 4B pencil on Canson 50 lbs drawing sketchbook.

Hi David, nice sketch. I like how loose you have drawn it. You certainly got the elements well balanced within the drawing. I would pop the darks a little more to help give this some punch.

Hi Sandra nice and loose. Well done.

Nice sketches, David and Sandra .
Here is a first study of the spiral staircase. -- OK, most of the time there is no sequel, but anyway --

Woodless pencil 2B on Daler Rowney textura, size A4.

Re: Weekly Drawing Thread - August 23 - August 29

David, I'd love to see what you would do in a second version.

Arnoud, I think the architect in you really comes out in that drawing. That paper you have there has a very nice texture! How heavy is it? Could it take a bit of wash ? Or is it mainly for dry media?

Carol, thanks for letting me post an effort of mine from a year ago also from this challenge. I put in a lot of time in this one back then because I was still such a beginner.

It was a combination of General's woodless pencil 6B and a carpenter pencil which is around 4B. If I do it now, there would be a mythical python slithering down the stairs and you wouldn't see the stairs or a dragon poking its snout in.

Sandra,
interesting interpretation .

Thank you for your comments. The commercial on the Textura paper states that it "will also take a light wash". I never tried, I guess that with only 135 g/ sqm it will buckle very easily.

Not a great representation. I'm a little rusty.

Looks like just about all of us picked the Romantic Staircase this week. Here's mine. This was fun and different for me.

These are wonderful and as soon as I can het them printed, I'll do a couple. I've discovered a love for architectural drawing. The lines and angles call to me.
