Kelp Revolt

This is an experiment with paint skins. I used two large bottles of clear Gallery Glass paint and mixed in a few colors of acrylic paint. Let it dry for a few weeks then cut it out in a spiral and adhered it with gel medium to the canvas. The "kelp" parts are about 3/16" thick.

Re: Kelp Revolt

This is utterly beautiful and a successful experiment! It is like an opposite universe of swirling galaxies and planets, where there is the predominance of light instead of darkness in an underwater world...you have managed to make kelp very attractive.

More experiments please.

Re: Kelp Revolt

Thanks a lot, I appreciate the response. I'm in a experimentation phase right now and there are some real clunkers in the mix but I think this one is cool.

Bisco, I was thinking of altering the title to "Kelp Revolution" to keep the jist but suggest the swirl as well. Is that title a step down in your opinion?

Re: Kelp Revolt

Hi Rob - Loving this one too ! I am assuming that this piece is possibly around the same dimensions as "Thinking inside the Box" [hoping I got title right].

Am still feeling that your work would really lend itself well on a very large scale.

Anyway keep up your wonderful experimentations - They are resolving themselves into beautiful results.

Regards

Dahzl

Re: Kelp Revolt

Thank you, Dahzl! You are sooooo close. The other one was 27 x 27 and this one is 28 x 27.

I sometimes do work larger, up to 52 x 52" (132 x 132 cm) or so.The larger pieces seem to lack focus. In smaller works I can "curate" each area and each layer. Going large leads to laziness. Perhaps because I have small hands?

Yet I have a plan for doing some larger works and still paying attention to effective composition. When I'm done with these experiments maybe the larger work will follow. Because I have two very large frames waiting to be filled up.

I totally got the Revolving aspect from you just using the word Revolt.
an element unique to message boards in being able to see the title before the art is wildly fun to me. So then when i see the swirls it was an extra inner mental chuckle that made me think of the artists sense of humor. And that is pretty rare with a work of art that isn't overtly funny. Its hard to put into words... the difference in concept of an artist who is using kelp with humor and one who isn't. I'm in a really over thinking mood today. Id stick with Revolt. Its just enough to imply and make reference to your swirls, while Revolution almost implies that kelp might just be taking over the world, which has nothing to do with swirls.

Re: Kelp Revolt

This is lovely! It may sound funny, but the first thing that came to my mind are those tiny snails that travel with their "home" on their backs. The swirl and the colors are just like that. This brought to mind summer mornings and I instantly liked the painting.

Re: Kelp Revolt

Lovely painting. You know when to leave things alone any more would be too much. Using paint films is on my experiment list as well.... but it is a long list.
