Marc Hanson workshop; days 1 and 2

We're having a great time here in Taylors Falls, MN in Marc's workshop. There are 15 of us, most from Minnesota and me, the straggler from New Brunswick. A really fun bunch to paint with.

The first day, we did value studies using Ivory Black and Titanium White. The goal was to skip all the edge work, gradation and detail and simply paint shapes in three values (or four), sort of like puzzle pieces. For these first two days, I used 8 x 10 panels and divided them in two with tape in order to conserve panels. These are the six I did the first day.

Today, we did the same thing but used color. Again, we were to just use 3-4 values. I got four of these finished today.

Bruce, well now you know who got me inspired to do those value studies regularly! I am so happy for you to be there in Marc's class. Thanks for sharing your images. I know what you mean about conserving panels....I did a lot with just taping primed canvas to foamcore to save panels! I'm looking forward to seeing the past two days' work become integrated into the rest. Keep 'em coming!

Say hi to Marc for me!

Jamie

Will do, Jamie. I've known Marc for about ten years but had never actually seen him until yesterday.

Good....he's workin' you. But in short order its becoming part of your developing unique way of seeing and interpreting light of nature. The essentials that will identify what is most and efficiently put down. Good for you...these are fine and already the color value exercises are showing sound progress. Keep it up...give Marc and others our well wishes.

Have you had the humidity over there we've been getting hit with here in NE Wisconsin?

Thanks, Larry. Yep, very hot and humid. Tonight, we had pretty intense thunderstorms with lots of lightning and rain. There was a tornado watch as well. The sky was a really eerie greenish looking color around 7:00 or so.

You're so lucky to be able to get tuition from someone of Marc's calibre, Bruce. Looking forward to seeing more.

Thanks for sharing this workshop with us, Bruce! Your value studies look good. I wish there was an artist from Maryland in the workshop (me!) Have a great time and soak up lots of knowledge.

Thanks, Michael and Donna. There actually is an artist here from Maryland but, alas, it is not you.

Hi Bruce,

Marc's a great teacher as I'm sure you already know. I'm very impressed with the value studies in B&W you've done. They show your skill at composition is accomplished as these are pleasing to view even as simple abstracts. Marc did this exercise with us when I was fortunate enough to attend a workshop of his. They make you think, don't they? They also have the added benefit of making you think in terms of shape instead of object, which is so important. Thanks for posting your progress. I hope we get to see more. Tell Marc I said hello!

Randy

Re: Marc Hanson workshop; days 1 and 2

I will say hello for you, Randy. Today we did what I call the four-painting panel. A three value B&W and then a fully developed (edges, gradation, etc.) B&W of the same subject. Then a three value color of the same subject and, finally, a fully developed color painting, again of the same subject.

I taped off an 11 x 14 and got three and a half of them completed. Might clean it up tonight and post if time. Meeting for dinner soon so I have to scoot. We'll do a nocturne later tonight but I might just watch Marc. The jury's still out on that one.
