favourite software for digital art

Depending upon the type of project; PhotoShop 7, Painter, 3dStudio Max, Vue d'esprit, and the Gimp.

I've found each has their strengths for different things.

Most of the time, I'll say photoshop 7 (or else) because I know the software quite well but sometimes Painter, for the smoothness ... Painter works so well with wacom tablets.
I confess, I sometimes played qith Bryce to render 3D objects when I was in a playful mode, will that be ok father ?

Photoshop rules the roost here as far as raster graphics are concerned, none of that Puntshop Pro for me. For 3D graphics I use POV-Ray (freeware!) or Poser (very expensive ware) and for vectors Zoner3 (another freeware).

Also for dicing images for webpages I prefer Dicer over Fireworks. If anyone is using Dicer and interested i have built an addon application that takes your Dicer tables and turns the images into cell backgrounds. Email me for info if you are interested.

I love to work with TrueSpace 4 using PhotoShop and PaintShop Pro for texture work and final touches on rendered images.

I have long been interested in 3d modeling, but spend my money on other expensive apps like Photoshop 7 and Painter 7 and GoLive 6....

I've been using Painter for several years now. Until recently I haven't had the space to set up my real paints, and Painter has filled in for them. It's also allowed me to experiment with photographs in a way I couldn't have with traditional media. So it gets my vote as my favorite

I use PSP 7, Painter, and occasionally PS 7, but soon PSP 8 will be number one, when everyone finds out what it can do.

Hope they have a demo. I read on a brochure (can't find the link) and it seems to say some improvement interface changes will be present as well as another type of palette which is like colour you can mix about like you would with paint. I have seen this used in Project Dogwaffle (and no other app) so maybe Painter saw that and thought it was a good idea

dk_art, I like Painter but it's so difficult to use, I can't even see all my brushes. I also hope that 8 is a big improvement. Usually, they don't have trials, but one can hope.

Painter! I love Painter...and a friend of mine who beta-tested Painter 8 says it is awesome -- and she's a Photoshop girl, herself.

Supposedly, they have improved the watercolors.

I have an old computer and will not be able to afford an upgrade anytime soon. The latest programs all need more resources than I have available. I was hopeful about PSP 8 but it went over the top. Painter Classic works well on my computer and Painter 7's requirements are within my parameters but even at the latest price reductions by the time I can afford it (within a month) 8 will be out. The price will be back up there. I also have yet to hear what 8's system requirements will be.
But viewing the glass half full I still haven't gotten everything I can out of the programs I presently own.

Personally I find PhotoShop very fiddlly and awkward to use also too expensive, so I'll stick with PSP 8 for image manip and Painter for painting and Expression 3 for vector sketching.

I don't know about your graphic skills, but you can look at mine, a lot done with PSP 7, and a lot with 8. Some in P7, but it quit. For most folks, psp will do anything, you can do. Get 7, it's older, cheaper, and isn't a syst hog.
