Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

At long last have taken a break of sorts from Fertile Lands [which is now Fertile Worlds] and begun this colored pencil rendering of coconuts... this is the sketch transferred to an illoboard [which, btw, is actually white, not the grey seen here]...

What is sort of funny about this is - these are from real coconuts, with their shells [except for the one], yet it seems as if, in how they are placed, with the light, etc., there comes forth 'personalities' here beyond what was expected [or - perhaps too much coffee here and an overactive imagination ]

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

For this, I decided to use china blue, since, except for the indentions of the coconut, it is a rather light subject, even in the deep shadows...

After which I layered a round of light umber in the lit area...

The second round was using a circular motion to the layering, emphasizing the dark areas of the shadow, and the lit area - as seen in progress -

and completed...

Note that tho circular, they now follow the linear marking of coconut development...

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

The next layering was chocolate in the shade area, as well as linear differentiation along the whole of the coconut and the indentations...

Then layering of spanish orange and sand in the lit area, especially the spots still seeing some of the illoboard beneath...

Further refinement of the chocolate, especially in the deep shade area...

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

Then, lastly, deep shading with the dark umber, both in the indentations and the rear of the coconut...

and the baby is done,,,

[do note that in all of this, the image comes from my head, and my familiarity with coconuts... note, too, there is more 'hairyness' to the shelled coconut, and this will be added later, after the others are done]
[note also that whatever 'white' is still seen will be removed with either a blender or further hairyness creating]

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

Between trying to get the pen and ink mural rendering done to certain stages, and my post op physical therapy et al, as well as a few other things, it was hard to get to this until the weekend... hopefully can shift back and forth without too much other interruptions for the coming two weeks, then both ought to be finished...

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

As with the first, the base shade color will be china blue with the others, as seen in this next one...

and with these, the linearness of the shells are such that not need to do other than lining the direction of the pencil to the curvings of the shell [deformed as this one is]...

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

For the lit area, instead of using light umber for the first layering, am using french greys - 50% for the medium lit, 10% for the high lit, and 90% for the shaded....

Re: Nut House - WIP [x-posted from colored pencil]

I follow up with putty beige, while adding more 50% and 90% french grey [the latter especially over the blue, and in drawing out the lines of the coconut shell linear indentation along the axis to the rear]... while outside in the sun, the shell may present itself in greys more cold, indoors is another matter - so french greys and the putty beige are used...
