Velazquez master copy

Hello everyone!

I'm new here, and this is my first post.

I'd love to have my painting critiqued and commented on. I'm not a very experienced artist (in fact, I'm still in high school) and this is my first master copy. Hopefully any consecutive ones will be much better!

The painting is 18"x24", done in oil.

Thanks very much!

*Also, please excuse the quality of the photo- it's much too dark and there is a bit of a reflection. I'll try to post a better photo soon.

Thanks Sandy!

I'm glad you like it, and I'll definitely try to put up some more of my work.

I'd love to do the Mona Lisa too...though I'm not sure if I'll be able to capture that elusive smile! I'd need to work on my sfumato technique first, haha....

Re: Velazquez master copy

Here's a better photo of the painting. It's much lighter and in a bit better focus.

That's your first master copy? Remarkable! But I presume you've done a lot of paintings of other things.

Re: Velazquez master copy

I have been struggling with art for longer than you have been alive, I cannot even dream of painting like that. So I think you might well have a future as artist in you. ;-)

If I can make one point of criticism, it seems to me the hand is perhaps a bit awkwardly done, but I haven't seen the original so it's difficult to tell. Anyway, as I said, on the whole I can't paint like this, so take whatever I say with a grain of salt. ;-)

Re: Velazquez master copy

I've been substitute teaching art at the local High School. This work is great and I'm comparing it to the more talented students.

Really a nice job. I don't have the original infront of me which would help in giving some kind of critique.

Perhaps post the original and your copy for comparison.

Continued success.

Tom

Re: Velazquez master copy

Brilliant work! Please do show more of it here.

Your brushwork is very good particularly the face- this was definitely something that set Velasquez's work apart from his competitors so you've done well to learn from it

I agree with Brian's crit that the hand looks a little awkward. I think that if you can darken the fingers as they recede and soften the edges, this will help

Here's a link to Wikipedia so others can see the original and what a good job you've done!

Your work is amazing!! I'd like to see where you'll be in a few years. I also love the chiaroscuro technique. The dark backgrounds with faint light, like candlelight, and the shadows of those sources, take you back to a different era. My medium is pastels, but I would love to try a piece in that style.
