Yes, Paula's Farm Again.....I call it "Late Afternoon Too"

Okay, so now that Susan Jenkins has started a trend, I feel the need to jump on the band wagon! I actually had this painting completed Monday night, and was waiting to tweak the front grasses before posting it, when lo and behold, Susan was painting the same thing!

Paula's photo is a beauty. Thank you Paula! I've been eyeing it up ever since I painted her other photo (also a beauty), which was more from a distance. I named the first one Late Afternoon, and I sold it about two weeks ago. I was both happy (to sell a painting) and sad (because it was a favorite of mine). THANK YOU PAULA, FOR POSTING SUCH NICE PHOTOS!

So, here is my close up version called Late Afternoon Too. Size is 9x12, and it's on Uart 400 paper. I did an alchohol underpainting, then I used Mount Visions, Giraults, Grumbachers, and Ludwigs. My first painting had those yellow 'wild flowering parsnips' that 'blue likes!, and so I continued the theme and put them in this one also. In my world, they hang out by this barn! I've also changed up the roof a bit. I just didn't have the patience to put in all those small panels (Paula, you definitely have more patience than me!), so I sort of enlarged them a bit! Artistic license, I guess!

C&C is always welcome and appreciated. Thanks for looking!

Really, really nice! With all that vivid color, I could see this done in a larger format, too...................give you something to think about!

I LOVE this very much, especially the background, so real and yet dreamy. One bug for me is that one tall yellow flower against the barn wall. It looks so tall that my nature girl self wonders why there are not even one or two tall ones in the foreground? just a silly nit on my part - had to say it though! I have learned heaps looking at how you do your trees.

WOW! Those 'wild flowering parsnips' are to die for! outstanding! - just love the background hills in various layers - and all the colors in the barn roof really sets this painting off - the only thing I'm having a problem with is finding Paula sweeping the barn!

great job! - 'blue....'

Very nice, Chris! Those hills in the background are really lovely. The only little thing I see is that IRL barn boards lose alot of their detail as they move farther from us. Sometimes the divisions between the boards disappear and the boards kind of merge into one mass. But of couse the photo shows every little thing and I really struggle with that! If this were mine (I wish!) I might consider losing some of that detail to push that end of the barn farther back in space. I really like how you took advantage of the dark space between the field and tree to pop in a few colorful 'sparks.' They give the scene a lot of life!

Re: Yes, Paula's Farm Again.....I call it "Late Afternoon Too"

Deb,

Thank you! I haven't ventured too large yet on my landscapes, but yes, I definitely will think about it!

Huni,

I really didn't see that! I was so enamored with the bright yellow against the dark purple, that I wasn't thinking logistics! Yeah, it is too high, and I've removed it . Oh well, you are right! Thanks for catching that!

'blue,

Thanks so much! I just can't resist those 'wild flowering parsnips'! They add so much color! I think Paula is taking a coffee break !

Tanja,

Thanks very much! I appreciate it!

Donna,

Yeah, maybe you're right. I went back and got rid of some detail as it goes away from the foreground. I guess I wasn't thinking like that, because it's not like it's a mile away, just a few feet. Thanks for stopping by!

Jen,

Thank you so much!

beautiful piece. I also think it would make a great painting if it was larger.

What I really like about this is the angle of view, looking up at the scene. It gives it a freshness that makes it stand out from the gazillions of other idyllic barn scenes out there. Was that angle of view part of your artistic license, or was the ref photo like that? Regardless, you did a great job with it. Bravo!!

Jan

Re: Yes, Paula's Farm Again.....I call it "Late Afternoon Too"

Paula,

Thanks so much! I really appreciate it. That photo had so much color to work from, it just seemed to spark my imagination. Not all photos do that, I think it has something to do with the lighting. I find this to be true also, when I take pictures out on the east end of Long Island (where I live). The lighting out there is very different, giving the photos a different feel. It also has a lot to do with the time of day. I can get good results close to home if I take pictures early morning or late afternoon - thus, the name of the painting!

Ceci,

Thank you very much! I really appreciate it. I have to start thinking larger!

Jan,

Thank you for all your kind words! The photo did have the same angle, which was one of the things that made me want to paint it. Like you said, it doesn't look like all the other barn scenes out there. That Paula can take a good picture!

The things I did take artistic license with were, to name a few, the roof of the barn (I painted it very differently), the distant trees, the wildflowers weren't in the photo, and I removed a dead tree which I felt wasn't working. The reference photo is in the RIL called "Old Barn in Jasper", under Farms/Ranches if you want to take a look at it. Like I said, it is a beauty!
