Bouguereau Boogie - June-July 2010

Where is Bouguereau? I'm not quite sure but he was quite evident in the 1880's.

So this is a two month get together on one wonderful artist. The goal here is simple - to become familiar with this guy.....imitate, exaggerate, distort if you like...use various mediums.....discuss........sketch......

Here are two links...one to wikipedia background info

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William-Adolphe_Bouguereau

one to a website with his art work

http://www.bouguereau.org/biography.html

I'm looking forward to spending time with this consumate artist. A true classical

At long last, he's here! Thank you, Robin. Finally, there's a reason for me to paint naked people again. Thanks for the two month time span, not that it would deter us from posting even way after! Now, let me go and borrow some Bouguereau books first.

Oops, double post.

Just read his brief biography. Wow, he painted 826 paintings. His paintings really look photo realistic.

Re: Bouguereau Boogie - June-July 2010

so I think what I'll be doing is a 5, 10 & 20 minute sketch of one and then using that study - doing a screen print reduction image. A rather an unclassical approach to the classical - but FUN!!!

Have you learned to spell his name without looking yet???

It's a difficult one, isn't it? I always have to double check!

So many beautiful paintings to choose from...

I think I will try some sketching first to help me decide on which to actually try and paint.

So far, I'm looking at The Girl Holding Lemons and Childhood Idyll. Doubt if my painting skills can do them justice, but I will enjoy the challenge.

Re: Bouguereau Boogie - June-July 2010

Well, there you have it: I have gone and turned his masterpiece "The bather" into a bit of dodgy post-impression. My apologies to Mr. Bouguereau, who surely must be spinning in his grave, but strictly realistic drawing is not my strong point... ;-)

Mechanical HB pencil on a smallish scrap of paper, about A5 sized and I didn't even use all of it either. But larger drawings than that are not my strong point either!

Good proportions and expression, Brian. I chose a piece too but I think I'll follow your lead and do it in pencil or charcoal for a change.

Brian - I think this a a great study - it has alot of strength, clean lines, nice form and she looks healthy , by that I mean there isn't a seductive quality - just ....well,.... she looks like a nun with the head gear........(I'm just being silly ....... love it...

It's funny you should say that, because I remember that the first time I saw the original, my first thought was that it WAS a nun wearing nothing but her head gear.

The female nudes of those French academics often manage to look sort of chaste and sensual at the same time. Perhaps that is part of their allure.

Glad you liked my lines, because I have kind of given up on realistic drawing, so I am now focusing mainly on line...

oh, you probably just "think" you are giving up - you are just giving it a rest -

Sometimes I look at all the really accomplished folk who post and get feeling down but hey, it's not about competition....it's about fellowship, right. And good artist's are not snobby....they're human too.....Don't let'em get to ya Flash. ease up and relax

Now don't you start - I have found giving up on realism to be wonderfully liberating. ;-)

Hi Brian

Lovely drawing - I really like lines too.

Here's my attempt at The Girl Holding Lemons. Just graphite in my A4 sketchbook.

Re: Bouguereau Boogie - June-July 2010

Inky, that is a good rendition. You did her hair well. Wow, 10 fingers. How could you stand it.

I just make blobs of their finger and toes.

Here's one that I was testing my new watercolor pencils with. Needs a lot of getting used to. Really messed up on the cleavage on this one. Added some Daniel Smith watercolors.

It's really tiny.

2 x 3.5 inch
