Zipamid: found object project

Cross posting this between Mixed Media and Sculpture. I enjoy making found object wall-hang sculptures. I work mostly in the vein of Louise Nevelson, with varied textures/sizes etc.

Lately I've been considering a series or works that is perhaps more formal. For some reason, finding 100 or 1000 of the same item and turning that into a sculpture seems cool. Here is an example, which I may call zipamid. It will be made from hundreds of zip disc hubs.

Ordinarily I would just go make something and not look twice but this one is a lot of effort. It has taken me weeks to find and disassemble the discs, remove the hubs, and recycle the rest. And the work I've done thus far only covers this much:

So I have many looong hours ahead. So in this case, I wonder: is the end result compelling? Or is this just a long way around towards mediocrity and an uninteresting piece?

The piece looks great. It has shape, depth and a great visual impact.I certainly don't think it's mediocre or uninteresting. You stated it would be a wall hanging, which would give a variety of interesting shadow effects depending on how the piece was lit. My only problem is I haven't a clue what "zip disc hubs" are !! Keep going and finish it.

Thanks! I will do, I just got ~100 more zip discs this week. The hubs are the little round metal parts in the center of the diskettes.

Rob,
Please post a pic when it's finished and hung.

I think it's worthwhile. You could probably sell it to a computer company/Web company to display in their lobby. Up-and-coming, smart computer companies are always doing stuff like that. I can see a place for it.
