"Giggling Goats" -- April Challenge

I was torn between the goats and Mighty Cones... love the umbrellas... but I fell completely in love with this pair of pals, especially the expression on the face of the one on the right. Pure bliss. I've never tried painting animals before, so thought I'd give it a go!

Strathmore 140lb, 9" x 12"
Yarka 10 pan cheapies! (excellent for painting outside while watching kids play); used the cool green and yellow for background and a few strokes on goats, plus brown and black

Why did I name it "Giggling Goats"? When I was little, my mom used to call me a happy goat (in Dutch the words almost rhyme), and now that I have two little girls in the house, I totally understand why!

C&C welcome

(thought I should add the reference photo, cropped a bit off the original)

Esther- your goats are just fabulous!! I told my hubby to come look at your goats, and he said 'those look just like OUR goats'! I can see where two little girls leaping about and giggling would be called that! I love 'Mighty Cone' too...

Re: "Giggling Goats" -- April Challenge

Thanks Linda & hubby! Coco was sitting with me painting rainbows (the little Yarkas are non-toxic, which is nice), so I was a little more distracted than I would have liked. Looking at it now, I could have spent a little more time on the white one, but overall, I don't hate it... I actually quite like the way the horns turned out, and the brown one's eye.

I know all too well how hard it is to paint white goats! I think if you define the nose of the white one (Mercury) a little more it will be perfect! The horns are great and so is Chuckie!

Oh my GG - you did a wonderful job on these giggling goats - they're adorable! Take a look at it in greyscale - I think you can go a little darker on the underside of the horns - it would give a little more dimension. I agree about the nose on the white goat, just a little more definition.

For never having painted animals - you did super! I love how you captured the expression. Well done!

Re: "Giggling Goats" -- April Challenge

Thanks ML, that's sooo helpful! I always forget about being able to do that

BTW, loved that video link of Arleta Pech doing wet on dry backgrounds. (((Thanks for posting it!))) I tried using that technique with this, but didn't have much luck. Not sure if my puddles weren't big enough, or maybe different paper, but I couldn't make the beautiful flowy smooth gradations the way she did... so I went with blotchy gradations instead Works for me! In this case, anyway.

Esther, great job on the goats! You did a great job, especially as it was your first with animals. When I saw the reference pics, that one just jumped out at me. How adorable!

Could you tell me more about that video link about painting wet on dry? I'm trying to psyche myself up to working on a new painting, and that's how I'm thinking about doing it. Thanks!

Thanks Sandy... Linda's goats are totally adorable. The link ML gave me was http://videos.artistdaily.com/video/...-with-Arleta-P

Thanks Roger... the paper is 300 Series Strathmore watercolour cold press. I bought it as a pad of 12 sheets (over 10 years ago, and this was the last sheet! I have serious issues with dirtying white paper )
