My tube blacks and my dark color charts:

I have found that even the phalo blues and greens can make a really nice dark. I often use the Indanthrone Blue as a beautiful dark!

**After doing your dark charts - which are your favorite?**

Please post what your like or dont like colorwise....

Re: April Mini Classes- 4 x 4 -Homework Thread

Hi Connie,
I just spent an hour going through my paints to find which blacks I still had and the darks that would be usable when making substitutes.

Here is my chart for the Blacks. I included the Manufacturer's Name and the Pigment Numbers as well for each color:

The funny thing is I bought the three of them years ago (hence the Cotman brand) but still have almost full tubes since I don't usually use them.

Here is my range of Dark Tones in various colors:

I'm not sure which is my favorite, but the ones I use most often are Indanthrone and Faence Blues (as you see, they both have the same pigment number). I had forgotten about the Perylene Green, but needed a really dark green for a Tulip painting background that I'm working on, so I've already put it to use there.

The Moonglow is my newest dark. My instructor in the Thursday class recommended it. It makes beautiful grays. I used it in my last painting for that purpose.

This has been fun. Looking forward to the rest of the Tutorial.

Sylvia

My Mixed blacks color charts:

If you look closely at your blacks you may find some really nice color mingling with in the blacks and more of a texture apperance in some more that others.

What did you find in yours?

I love to mix my own darks; lookin' forward to mixing some of these myself---probably gonna be weekend work for me though...I"ll be back around. Seems like one of my books have a favorite recipe in it for a nice deep dark...hmmm...might have to go hunting around a bit...
Thanks for the all the great ideas...

Re: April Mini Classes- 4 x 4 -Homework Thread

Being very out of practice I thought I would use this great little class as a good reason to wet my brushes.

The 'painting' (think of it as an in studio tonal+color sketch) is on a very cheap quarter sheet of paper. Taking under 30 mins to do. I did I first wash of Nickel Dioxine (aka 'new gamboge'). The core was then Prusian blue and Perrylene Maroon to make the darks and so imitate the tonal structure of the ref.

It's no master piece but it met the requirements I set for it. I did not go dark enough on the first dark wash so needed a second [SIGH].

Many thanks for the class Conni.

I haven't had time to work up my charts, yet... but I have done a value study using Payne's Grey... this was my first time with this pigment and I rather liked the darks that I was able to achieve...

So... putting the cart before the horse... here's my painting ahead of my charts...

Re: April Mini Classes- 4 x 4 -Homework Thread

Here are my darks created by mixing two of the colors from the previous search for darks on my palette. It was an interesting activity to see the range of darks you can make with two colors.

BTW: DS = Daniel Smith; MB = MaimeriBlu; WN = Winsor & Newton; DaV = Da Vinci; the others are spelled out.

Re: April Mini Classes- 4 x 4 -Homework Thread

I have not had time to do anything for this lesson, but would like to share a night scene I did about 2 years ago (won a state award in WV). I used Neutral Tint (W&N) along with dark greens and blues. I masked all the highlights in the dark areas before painting the darks. I found the Neutral Tint to be 'dirty' for lack of a better word. If I did it over I would use much less N Tint and make the dark blues, purples and greens from mixing. I also used some of Daniel Smith's iridescent paints. C & C welcome!
