LIttle Cloud Study
Hello,
I wanted to practice painting clouds and did this little study. Oil, 6 x 8 inches.
Any comments and criticism welcome.
Thanks for looking.

Re: LIttle Cloud Study
Unbelievably sweet. Clouds are fun to use to compose a piece. I can see that you consciously tried to show their rhythm here, and to me that's all you need. The boldness of this is just nice.
The scale here works as well, to show a large composition in a smaller canvas size. I am a bit concerned about those "very darks" in the trees. Yes, they do give lots of contrast to the sky, but I'd think they would lean more possibly dark blue or violet given the golden hour conditions here.
Keep on truckin! This is a nice piece.

Thanks everyone for looking and posting your comments.
Kyle, I think you are absolutely right. The dark in the trees would look better if it were a dark blue instead of the black underpainting showing through. I appreciate you pointing that out.
Thanks again for looking!

Re: LIttle Cloud Study
There is a nice rhythm in the sky and the swirling brush strokes are descriptive as well. In fact there was a Dutch chap used to do that a bit

I really like the surface texture on this- did you use a knife?

Re: LIttle Cloud Study
Beautiful color and texture. I don't mind the dark shadows on the trees, but the red roof seems out of place. It's not repeated anywhere else and it's smack dab in the middle.... hmm. Otherwise, great study, the clouds are wonderful! Ruth

Re: LIttle Cloud Study
I think this painting is really great in its simplicity, freshness, spontaneity. The red picks up the warm tones in the sky and creates a triangle of warmth. It could be toned down, but I think its placement is important. It also seems to anchor the warm right side of the sky as it moves to the cooler left.

Jessica, you asked if I used a knife. I didn't, I just used a brush.
