brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

I've just taken delivery of some 'water washable brush cleaner' from Daler Rowney, its completely odorless and it can clean brushes that have been used with any kind of oil paint - you just wipe off excess oil with a rag, squeeze out a small bead of the cleaner and work it into the brushes - then wash your brushes with clean water!

this is going to be a godsend for me because even though I like my WMO's there are still a lot of colours I can only get in the artists oil paint range - this cleaner means I now have the same level of cleanup convenience and freedom from odours that I get with my Artisans

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

Is the Daler Rowney brush cleaner also non-toxic? I also miss the oil colors I used to use, but my husband sometimes has a life-threatening degree of asythma. I can't take a chance of making him sick.

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

yes as far as I can tell its non toxic, theres no health warnings or other warning labels its mostly just natural oils I think, its non flamable and pretty much odour free too (just a slight smell like hand cream)

I'm asthmatic myself so I have to be careful and I've had no adverse reactions to this Cleaner

BTW the natural oils in the cleaner help to condition your brushes too, my brushes have felt a lot nicer since using this stuff

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

Thank you so much for the information on the brush cleaner. I need to finish my water soluble oils, since I spent so much on getting a full palette. Then I think I might just go back to regular oil paints. I'm really excited about it.

I looked for Daler Rowney brush cleaner at Dick Blick, ASW, Jerry's Artarama, & Mister Art. Can't find it anywhere. Where in the world did you get it?

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

I got mine from a place in england called the SAA, I just saw it on the SAA website and bought it so didn't really have to search for it.

maybe its a new product and therefore has not been widely distributed yet?

BTW you can mix WMO's with conventional oils, I do it all the time!

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

Thanks for the information on where to get the brush cleaner. I guess I won't need it until I finish up using my WMOs anyway--by then it should be more easily available I would think. Yes, I have heard you and others say that we can mix regular oils with the WMOs, but it has seemed like too much trouble when you figure you can only use around 20% of the regular oils with the WMOs.

I'm really excited about being able to get back to regular oils. I'm just returning to oil painting after being away for about 6 years, so I need plenty of practise anyway. Thank you so much for your help.

Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

the 20% rule only applies if you are wanting to keep the water solubility, if you are not too worried about that aspect (I only use linseed oil to alter the consistency of my paints so its no problem for me) then you can mix them in any ratio you like

Unhappy Re: brush cleaner from Daler Rowney

I have looked all over the internet for this Daler Rowney brush cleaner. Nothing I found could be bought in the USA. However, I did find a list of products that the California Schools banned and it includes the Daler Rowney water soluble brush cleaner. Apparently, it contains formadehyde--it is not considered toxic whatsoever to breath, but it can be a problem if eaten. I wasn't planning on eating it, so I'm very disappointed that we cannot get it in the USA. Guess I'll have to keep using baby oil or safflower oil along with my Masterson brush cleaner. Thanks for the info though.
