Talking Jereth the werewolf

I finally did it he has been bouncing around in my head for five years now and I finally put him to paper. his name is Jereth my alter ego and the main character for a book I've been thinking about writing for Five long years and not only am I doing art but I've finally decided to start writing some time soon. Jereth is a werewolf he hasn't been one for very long. he and his girl friend serene were out on a camping trip in the mountains when they were attacked. they manege to get away but not entirely unscathed. Jereth is now doing his best trying to adjust to his new life but some times it can get a little ruff. any way this is a pick of Jereth he was going through some of his old stuff when he stumbled across an old photo of him and serene.
let me know if you like it and if you see anything that needs improving than let me know

Re: Jereth the werewolf

Its always good when you finally draw a character how you see them. I have a certain few myself that are a pain to get on paper. I love his beast form, though shape of head my need adjusting the next time you draw him, not sure why but it makes me think horse...maybe its the muzzle and lack of sharp teeth? Yet still a lovely creation and yay you gave him tail, I like werewolves with tails XD

Re: Jereth the werewolf

i know what you mean. the werewolf is my favorite creature and yet this is the fist time i have decided to keep him i ether didn't like the build the head was unproportionate the tail to long the colors didn't work. it also doesn't help that i mostly only draw monsters and animals my human physiology is absolutely awful. This is officially my first successful werewolf. i agree with you about the snout i think i ought to practice a snarl first before i can show some teeth and i already redid his tail on the original i didn't like the one i posted. my original inspiration as far as the snout on my drawing was the werewolves from Dragon age origins. instead my snout i guess ended up looking like a horses but i suppose that makes him original as far as werewolves. Now if i could just get him to snarl

Re: Jereth the werewolf

well as is said i already started working on fixing his beast form. I traced over the previous one and made him snarl shortened the tail a little and did a little more work on the coat and pads but aside from that hes just a quick correction of the mistakes i made. Now all i have to do is color him then upload him. but I'll do that tomorrow.

Nice Idea for your werewolf. Yes, I do think the muzzle was a bit horse like. I know you'll get the face the way you want it after you do a few idea scribbles. When I practice drawing facial expressions, I use a little mirror! I am impressed that you drew his legs right! I am looking forward to seeing the update! Oh yeah, How to DRAW FREAKS is a neat anthro book!

Oh yeah, I used to collect action figures-I like the werewolves you have! Better picture next time!

Hi Jereth

with respect, I think the head still reads as "horse" because of the comparatively wide muzzle, short mouth, narrow cranium, and dorsal mane.

If you do a google images search for "wolf", you will see that the muzzle is narrow, and the head has a sort of ruff of hair towards the junction of head and neck which makes the edge of the face appear broad and almost circular.

The problem with the "horse" look, I'd suggest, is that it implies herbivore rather than carnivore - which is, I guess, OK if you want a vegetarian werewolf

If you'd like, I've done a rough alteration in photoshop, to show you the sort of changes I'm suggesting, but I'll only post it here if I have your permission to do so.

The other thing I note from doing a google search is that when snarling in a threat display, wolves tend to adopt a posture with the ears flattened (which you'll note the dragon age ones pick up on).

Re: Jereth the werewolf

yes you are right about the muzzle this is just quick easy fix if i were to completely redo it I'd want to start from scratch again and that might take a day or two with my skills. though i would very very much like for you to post your example from photo shop ether wise i might never be able to do a proper wolf head though i thought id just throw it out there but the slits for the nose was intentional as aposed to the conventional wolf snout it was part of my attempt to leave just a little more of the human identity behind then most would.....note to self learn how to use Photo shop.

P.S. thanks for the tip on the ears defiantly going to try that on my next attempt.

P.P.S dont be affraid to critique my work I absolutly love it when i get criticism. if i didn't ever get criticized i probably wouldn't get any better at drawing.

Re: Jereth the werewolf

OK, this is a quick change of the head-shapes (using photoshop's "liquify" tool)

Any help?

Re: Jereth the werewolf

Darn i cant seam to be able to do a decent snarl that i like. Ive been trying for the past four hours. I'll definitely drop the ears and narrow the snout but don't think I'm quite ready to show the teeth....maybe one tooth??
o well teeth is something i will definitely need to improve on. thanks for the help i will not let your advice and guidance go to waist. all of you.

Re: Jereth the werewolf

Can I offer a few bits of general advice?

Firstly - draw larger - it makes it easier - there's an awful lot of blank space on the page around your figure there which you could have made use of.

Secondly - the best fantasy work is based on reality, I'd suggest - its reality given a good hard twist into something surprising.

So a good approach is to do studies of the real things you are using as a basis for your fantasy - in this case, look for some images of snarling wolves, and draw them, as a way of understanding what's involved in the anatomy and expression.

Third - can I ask you about where you'd like to develop your art? The figure is rather manga/anthro-art influenced - that's fine if that's what you are interested in doing - but if you would like to develop more towards a realism style, with figures that look more three-dimensional and so on, that's something that I, and others here, could offer help with, if you'd like?

I'll definitely try to draw them larger, though drawing them small is definitely a habit I need to break. Yes, I would most definitely like help.

Re: Jereth the werewolf

I narrowed the snout out and pulled his cheek back along with his mouth just a little. I also added a snaggle-tooth just cause I thought it look cool any way I hope that fixes the herbivore misconception. If so than I'm going to start from scratch next time I draw him rather than fix up the one I had already drawn. I'll add color. So I guess that sort of makes this one a final draft feel free to comment in fact I prefer it. I think I want to work on his human form a little more. thanks
