back to the sixties.........street scene w.i.p

early sixties i went out yesterday to photograph for a long planned painting

( a first for me ) a landscapey street scene !!

i have photographed it as it is now it was an odd but very pleasant place to grow up in very countryside and villagey ( being out of town and next to farms and moorlands ) but at the same time having two engineering companies ( as can be seen on the left of the photo

i will have to also reinstate the railway embankment / station ( halt more like !! ) well its name was woodhill halt !!

this ran square across the back disecting the two engineering works and the rows of houses

if you notice on the right there is a newbuild house that doesn't look to fit in ( thats the old location of the railway embankment !!

most i can remember however the bridge will be improvised unless i can turn up a photo as i never saw the actual span just the abutments

although looking at the abutments it is a fair guess what the bridge type would reasonably be

pretty sure it will be metal as it was swiftly removed in beechings era leading me to believe a metal type as it would have been cut up and sold for scrap metal with the lines !!

a bit of edditing in photoshop with some further required elements ie period vehicles ,,,, the herald estate may well end up as the saloon version yet as only the roof section differed !!

This looks challenging.

If you don't change the name of the file, it will overwrite previous images of the same name.

A challenge indeed.
( Perhaps add a Boeing 707 coming in to land! )

This should look good and I'll be interested to see it progress.

Graeme

joking apart i live not too far from there now and am under the aproach for manchester airport ( 16 miles away )

i researched and discovered the line closed in 1953 however the truck is the correct period and the herald is a 50's style car so may or may not stay

it may be changed for a standard or other 50's design yet ..

Re: back to the sixties.........street scene w.i.p

after further research i have discovered the time period is fine for the herald but the railway will have to be a freight train they continued till 1963 but passenger services finnished in 1953

the herald may well end up being painted as my old herald 948 saloon only the rear of the roof need be altered as the same basic body was used for all models !!

Electrification
In 1912 Dick, Kerr & Co.‘s Preston factory were considering tendering for a Brazilian contract and approached the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway to use the branch for test purposes at Dick, Kerr’s expense. The line from Bury Bolton Street Station to Holcombe Brook was electrified with the overhead 3.5 kV dc system, rolling stock was also supplied at their cost. After prolonged trials the trains entered public use on 29 July 1913. The L&Y purchased the equipment and stock on the successful completion of the trials in 1916. During 1917 work started on the branch to convert to third rail to match the Manchester to Bury system. third rail trains started to run on 29 March 1918.
[edit] Closure

Passenger services operated until 1952, while freight services continued to Holcombe Brook until 1960 and Tottington until 1963

This has a lot of detail, can't wait to see how you handle it. I've pulled up a chair.

yes - each time you update the photo, add an 'a', 'b', and so forth at the end before filing - then ye not lose the older file photos...
