W&N Artist Panels

I just picked up a few Winsor and Newton Artist Panels that were selling cheap at Above Ground Art Supplies in Toronto. Has anyone tried these before? What is your take on them?

Re: W&N Artist Panels

Sorry, haven't tried them, Zan. But I'm curious as to what size they are. And, if you don't mind me asking, how much were they? I don't live too far from Above Ground, and wouldn't mind trying one of these. Are they as thin as other panels? Are they smooth or canvas-textured? Jerry

Re: W&N Artist Panels

Hi Jerry,

They are cotton canvas wrapped around a sturdy (not flimsy) panel. Here is what W&N has to say about them (Bolding is mine):
"Originally a sketcher's product these superior quality canvas boards feature canvas laminated onto high quality boards of excellent stability. They are stretched by hand for correct tension and tailored corners and are triple coated with one coat of acid free sizing and two coats of highly pigmented primer formulated by Winsor & Newton. Artists' Canvas Board is correctly prepared for immediate use by the artist and are suitable for use with Oil, Water Mixable Oil, Alkyd and Acrylic colours. The medium grain surface is ideal for all techniques including heavier applications of colour. The balanced absorbency and tooth of the canvas board prevents sinking of oil colours and improves adhesion."

Here is the link to above ground listing for them.

You should Join OPAS and come out with the group on future paint outs!

Re: W&N Artist Panels

Thanks for the info, Zan. I think I'll pick up a few of these and try them if the surface isn't too textured. I like a fairly smooth panel.
I did send in a request to join your group about three weeks ago, but hadn't heard back. Though I tend to favour urban subjects, I thought it would be interesting to meet an active group (relatively) close to home. Jerry

Hi Jerry,

I just checked and you are in the group already Don't be shy to call the troups for an urban paint out. I am sure many would love it. We have a few TO members so they would most likely love it.

Re: W&N Artist Panels

PS: Jerry,

I have used many different ready made canvas panels before. This certainly feels smoother than most but not as smooth as gessoed and sanded masonite of course. I like to lay the paint thick so I need a tooth to catch it and canvas does help. I have been thinking of going to plywood, but haven't figured out how to manage that yet without too much hassile.
