Winter Flow

Still enthralled with the winter landscapes. Good thing too. Won't be able to paint plein air for a few more months. This is my latest river scene. Welcome comments and suggestions. I'm afraid it is a bit out of control with no center of interest...

Re: Winter Flow

This is lovely Jill! Everything is excellent - it doesn't seem out of control at all to me. If you wanted to define a center of interest, my personal choice would be the left hand tree where a little piece of ice in the middle of the stream is hitting it. You could make that small piece of ice brighter if you wanted to draw your eye to focal point. You do have a tangent there so I would either extend the ice shape under the trees in the background or make the shape smaller. But, this is really a fabulous landscape - beautiful colors, composition, everything!

Re: Winter Flow

Wonderful painting! Not out of control at all! An intimate landscape like this needs no center of interest, really. But to me the creek is the center of interest, and since you have created the opening between the trees, we look there! It is as if we were standing on the bank of the creek! Love those touches of purple on the rock and the water!

Lovely painting! I agree with Don; I don't know that you need a single focal point here, as the trees have framed the stream nicely. This looks to be almost a square format; is it? If it is, I doubly agree that a single focal point isn't necessary or desired.

But if you still want that focal point, I agree with Eden's suggestion.

Oh Jill, it's lovely! Don and Deb are right, it has an AREA of interest already. A slight push and you're there. Maybe heighten the color of the rocks in the snow on the near bank, and slightly dull the snow on the far bank. Then I think it would work with the wonderful rock and leaves in the fore even more successfully. I love the work of yours I've seen lately. Wow...

Re: Winter Flow

Thanks so much to all of you for your thoughtful and helpful responses. I am relieved that you feel it is not out of control and that maybe this square format doesn't need a definite center of interest. I will however, dull down the snow in the background a bit and add some more interest in the front as Deborah suggested.

You guys are the greatest!
