What does line "3" show you ? If you draw a line between 2 points, you can freely choose the position of both points, the line will always connect both. But when a line connects 3 points, only 2 points are free (say one corner and the VP), and the line shows you where the other (say the second corner) must come.
BTW, it is strongly advised to use a ruler for drawing the VL's.
