X-Post Watercolor Forum "Chickadee Migration"
15x30 watercolor on Fabriano hot press paper that was coated with heavy gel medium. Three 6" squares were blocked off and covered with clear ConTact shelf paper. After stamping into the gel, I let it dry, then drew shapes and wrote words 'chickadee migration', covered all with blue and gold watercolor, then wiped off all paint. Next I carved out tree branches and limbs with my brush. Into the middle square I painted a bird's nest with eggs and let the painting tell me what it needed. A black crow appeared in the left square and far right a speckled leaf that uses repetition along with the eggs.
Mary Todd Beam outlines this process in her new book.
C&C welcome!

Kay- thanks for posting this here! Mary Lou is working on something using gel medium too...and this is so unique in it's collage style! I can look at it for a very long time and keep seeing new things! Marvelous in the colors and patterns! Love the eggs!

K, I love this! Love the patchwork and stamping. Isn't the gel medium fun to work with? I have Mary's book - I'll have to re-read that one. I think Judy Greenberg does a lot of work with gel medium as well...

Thanks Linda and Mary Lou. Yes, the gel is fun. I am a fledgling at this, though, and maybe that is why I selected birds as a subject or topic.

Thank you!
Hmmm...I've heard that at other times...I wonder what happens? Wonder if it's something I'm doing, or a blogspot glitch...well, off to see if I can find out!
Thanks for letting me know!

Re: X-Post Watercolor Forum "Chickadee Migration"
Kay, Cool use of gels and textures. I have the gels, but have only taken a products class with them at the closest Dick Blicks. Your work made think of using them for a full size project.

Thanks Kurlie, it is similar to working on Yupo but you have more control with the gels.

A very interesting technique and textures with wonderful results. I really like what you have done , it keeps one looking a long time which I would say is a sign of a successful painting.

Re: X-Post Watercolor Forum "Chickadee Migration"
I like this a lot! I though it was very interesting when I saw it before (in the WC Forum?). I've never used gels but I may give them a try. I'm looking for something different to use in an exchange I signed up for.
