Re: Sunset over the water

Hi Jane,

Thank you so much! I love the ocean too. I have been using just the three primary colors in my paintings lately, and I do like the effect. For this one I used burnt sienna, cad yellow medium and ultramarine blue.

Re: Sunset over the water

Beautiful movement in the water. I have a hunch the painting has more dark tones than show in the photo, as it only has mid-to-light values. If not, it needs some darker tones. Oh, and keep that horizon level. I photoshopped it to darken it.

Hi Betty,

The waves are very nicely done - good sense of movement in the image, and a nice touch with the spray on the closest wave.

Very Nice Betty, you do have to be very careful with the yellows and oranges to avoid unintentional greens. The size and positions of waves and rocks are nice, and overall the painting has captured the great feeling of a sunset at the beach.

Good job, Betty. The piece would benefit from lower foreground values. The value scale is pretty much the same from foreground to background. Lower foreground values will help promote depth and distance.

Re: Sunset over the water

Thanks you so much for looking and commenting on my painting. I really appreciate it.

Fulano de Tal - Your photoshopped version actually looks more like the actual painting, and the horizon in reality is level. Doesn't say much for my photography skills, does it?

John - Glad you liked that little spray on the wave. I struggled with that darn wave.

Randall - So glad you liked the sky and the wave.

Linda - Thanks so much. I'd like to join you on that rock.

Brian - I'll have to watch those yellows. Thanks.

Marty - The photoshopped version done by Fulano de Tal is really more like the painting.

Lots of good thoughts - thank you all!

Re: Sunset over the water

Beautiful fresh looking painting reminds me of a watercolour with the soft subtle colours that show so much light through the paper. I love the atmosphere it creates too, reminds me of a Spring time breezy day down on the beach.
