Talking Another UIP portrait

Unfinishedwork in progress that is. I was going to wait until I finished this to post this here but decided to post it here now as I have started working on it again and seeing it is here now....well I'll just have to finish it. Actually I have enjoyed drawing this and didn't put it aside because I was bored with it, I just had too much work on to do any drawing so now I am geting all these UIP's done.

I always thought this guy had a very interesting face so I thought I would try a portrait of him as really like his movies he has both directed and acted in.

The picture looks a bit wishy washy, some darks came out darker and some darks came out lighter than they really are because I did this with a scanner because its night here and cant use my camera or the flash will make it look worse. Anyway I've still got lots to do on it, the eyes aren't done yet, the band on the cap needs finishing as with lots of the shading wtill to do on the face. I tend start off with a rough sketch and then work all over the drawing and build it up all over and not like some people, ie start on the left and work you way across. So anything I should change etc etc etc feel free to throw it at me

Cheers
Glenn

Re: Another UIP portrait

I swear I've seen this or maybe the subject is just "familiar"

Looks like a great place to start. I also picked up my "Portrait of Wall Street" and am working on finishing it.

Re: Another UIP portrait

Glenn it`s a great portrait. Tiger Woods?

Looks almost finished to me, maybe the ear and our left cheek should need more details and shading.

Pencils and paper?

Really good work

Wow, a striking portrait so far, Glenn! I'm glad to hear that there are more darks coming along for this.

I am pulling up a chair for this one. Looks great so far!

Re: Another UIP portrait

You've got a really nice start here, Glenn. I'm glad you said it's not done as you do need a lot more value in his face. One thing I do see that could use a moment of attention has to do with our left side eye ... I'd like to see a little more dark in the outside corner to round it into his head a bit more. That one small section of it seems a tad flat to my eye. You also might consider darkening the underside of his cap brim slightly as it would be in shade.

Re: Another UIP portrait

You had me confused with UIP
Wonderful textures in the hat, Glen. Did he play rugby? His ear looks like it has seen one scrum too many . I'm just a little confused (again ) about that double line under the eye to our left. Of-course it could be there, it just looks a bit odd.

Recognized him right off from Predator. Bill Duke. "I see you."

You definitely nailed a likeness. Keep up the great work.

Re: Another UIP portrait

Great portrait--skin tones coming on a treat. Good advice coming from the poprtriat specialists but could I suggest softening the eye line/nose junction on the left side (right eye).

Cheers Ken, and still not done yeah that left eye was giving me probs I kept re-doing it, as its hard to get it to look not too abrupt next to the white bits. Cap is done now

Thanks Michael, lol...yeah he does look like he could have had a stint as a front rower. Yeah that line isn't as pronounced in the drawing, my scanner is really old and not that good quality.

Yep you got it Rob Thanks, LOL I think I've seen that movie at least 10 times...I just like the 3 phases the alien goes through, ie invisible, then you see him with his armor, then without.....darn ugly bugga tho.

Thanks Logie, I see what you mean, looks a bit too stark, I did try and soften it a tad.

Thanks a lot Sam Yeah that cap took a while getting all the folds etc right, I think I've finished the cap.....but then again I always find something that needs tweaking.

Well I spent all Saturday morning working on this, I finished off the cap, the shadow under the brim, darkening the forehead, shading the ear and putting down some undertones on his face.

I nearly had a major disaster though, I thought I'd take a photo of it outside and then a gust of wind came up and blew it off the chair I had it sitting on, and put 2 slight creases in the paper. Immediately I thought it was ruined but I ever so gently folded the creases back on themselves as they were not as bad as I thought at first and now they are not so apparent...........d'oh.......phew

In hindsight I wish I did this on better paper, its done on cartridge paper, but when I started it I thought it was going to be just a sketch but then it turned into a major drawing.

OK so here's an update ... still not a great picture as I ended up taking inside the house, I wasn't taking any more chances outside

Cheers
Glenn

PS: OMG didn't realise this was such a big post..........sorry
