Re: Challenge week 2
These are really fun, Nancy! I like the colors you chose in the 2nd one and the contrast and varied textures in the 4th.

Re: Challenge Paintings--week 2
Deborah, I really like the color combos you chose for these, esp. #2 - green/purple/yellow seem to always look nice together.
And they are so nice and loose!

Ruthie,
The rain may not have worked but the picture has a nice feeling of wetness with your stormclouds and reflections. They all look great together.I love how you did your right hand tree.

Re: Variations Challenge week 2 - Marion
Marion,
No3 also has lovely colours and is very different from the first two but I think thats part of what this whole challenge is about.

Challenge Week Two
Here are my four for week two.
They were all done on colourfix paper 5,6,and7 on Deep Ultra 8 on Rich Beige
8x8 inches around 30minutes
Pastels used Winsor Newton, Art Spectrum Munyo and Schmincke.
When I finished No 5 I realised how bland it looked and almost didn't post it. I have however decided to go with the good the bad and the ugly. I also see I use raw sienna/orange in almost every one.
#5
#6
I think the landing gear from the mothership will come down any minute
Very Red
#7
#8

This made me think of a track to the beach on a winters day.
Two weeks together

Re: Challenge Week Two
These are really great! I like numbers 6 and 7 very much, the colours are very vibrant. the first four look quite controlled but you can see that your style in the last four is becoming looser already.

Re: Challenge Paintings--week 2
Hi Deborah
If you live in an area which doesn't see much in the way of season colour changes, it is easy to get stuck into a tree-colour mindset. I am not sure what happens in your area, but perhaps you do not have the colour changes of some areas.
to help yourself change the colours of your trees in your pics, perhaps it might help to think of season changes elsewhere. Springtime acid yellows and sharp yellow-greens; Autumnal reds and oranges; wintry snow covered blackish or dark greenish branches with touches of turquoise. Then what about weather effects.....what would fog/mist do to your scene, or frost?
then there are the different and more unusual natural colours for trees - russets, pinks, blues - there are so many tree leaf colours in nature - and anyway, for this exercise, you can always use outrageous colours so long as the pic works.
But you know that.........

Re: Challenge Week Two
Mary, these turned out quite well! My favorite is #8 - love the dark, dramatic sky.
And I agree with Julie - when you post the two weeks' worth together, you can definitely see how you're getting bolder w/ color use (I find the exact same thing is happening with me ) and the paintings are looser in style.

Re: Variations Challenge week 2 - Marion
Thanks Mary Brigid, Nancy, Ruthie, Linn and Mary.
I've not done much in the way of landscapes with lots of sky - I'm more of a sunny day blue sky sort of person, but no.3 showed me how you can push the colour and get interesting result. This is so much fun playing around with colour and not minding.

Mary these are really interesting! I agree your style is loosening up! I'm drawn the the 3rd and 8th one. Love the 8th sky against the yellow ground.

Re: Challenge week 2
Sonya and Linn -- thanks for your comments -- definitely fun AND challenging.
In addition to the pastel challenge -- I've addressed my photoshop issues. I'm attaching my 'gallery' of week 1 here (Marion, I figured out, thanks to you for the push and Colorixn for the great instructions in her signature line). I've got a bit more to figure out but making progress. Now I can concentrate on the next version, what will it be???

Re: Challenge Paintings--week 2
Thanks everyone! Wish I had the leisure of time to respond to each one, but I'm reading all your comments and helpful thoughts (thanks, Jackie!) and will continue on my journey... I think for the next few I'm going to turn it UPSIDE DOWN to defuse the safe old, tried and true landscape habits!
