****Challenge-Week Two****

Deborah's challenge thread is here. (Has links to all participants.)

My first week is here.

And below is my uninspired effort of today. I started with 'local colour', in mid-values. (Truly, I did. ) Then every major part of a mass got three variations, for example top of bush - blue; 'side' of bush - green; base of bush - violet. The main tree (foliage) got 'boxed', with different colours on top, front, and side. I'm having fun with a new very yellow green, it yields very interesting colours combined with purples.

Oh, yes, same 'lousy' paper, in sort of neutral beige-greenish.

C&C.

5.

Re: Variations Challenge Week 2 - Charlie

Charlie, it looks more inspired than you felt, I guess. I like the subtle (for you, that is ) colors... Soothing looking.

Tres, great! The first one looks 'normal'... :-) and the second is way more adventurous! Love the sky of that one. The whole of it just glows!

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

Tres,

Good to see these --

my first impression -- first version -- really like the colors and how you worked the trees.

then I studied version two for a few minutes -- not sure I liked it as much as the other -- the longer I studied it -- I really like it -- the sky/clouds are beautiful and I like the reflective feel.

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

Thanks Charlie and Nancy!
And lol, I hated nbr two while I was working on it, cuz I hated the paper and the idea I had was not working on this surface. It is a 1200 grit and too smooth for my layering, I was planning on doing a lot of blending of various types on this, but the paper would not take my abuse, and kept gumming up the pastel, but it is ok I guess. I do like the color combination of the turquoise and peaches, but not the application, so thanks, that makes me feel a bit better that you had to do a double.

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

These are both really nice, Tressa!

I like the colors and texture from the paper and sense of depth in the first one (purple and green are always winning combos in my opinion).

The second is a perfect example of an abstracted landscape, and the sanded surface of the paper gives it a nice, soft appearance. The coral/turquoise colors work, and the black in there really adds to it. Is the black the paper or pastel? I would love this on my wall .

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

Thanks Sonya, it was interesting (although very frustrating as paper wouldn't cooperate, my son was bugging me to take him to the mall, the puppy was chewing, and the phone kept ringing!!! )to do the abstract.
The black is the paper.

Tressa, Very nice!!! Love how you used just 2 colors and were able to achieve such contrast and differing moods of the same scene.

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

Tressa,
like Nancy I liked the first one best (in fact if it was mine I would frame it) but the second one grows on you the more you look.
This is such an interesting challenge.

Re: Variations Challenge Week 2 - Charlie

Hi Charlie,
I like these colours and you have a lovely distant atmospheric thing happening behind your trees. It is very interesting for me to hear how you plan your colours.I realise I usually just try and copy the reference colours.

I think this one really works Charlie.

It seems you are not happy with it?

Re: Challenge Paintings Week 2 - Tressa

Great Tressa,
Really love the first one, that combo of colours is most appealing. I'm a bit stuck on mine so maybe I will try that combo to get me back into the swing of it.
The third one looks really loose and it looks like you had fun - I wouldn't have guessed it was such a struggle. Another great colour combination to try.

Re: Variations Challenge Week 2 - Charlie

I like that colour commbination in the mid ground - the green on the turquoise? Another unusual treatment of the trees.
To me the painting looks like morning with the sun peaking through and trying to make up its mind.
