stiffen up canvas

hey i have a canvas that's very slack, it seems like it has a bubble flappy part on one side with marks from the wooden side bars imprinted..

when i wet the back it tightens up nicely and these marks are removed

but come again in a week or so and the canvas is slack again

could i wet the back and put maybe some clear acrylic at the back of the canvas to stiffen it up so it holds its shape permanently?

Re: stiffen up canvas

Sounds like a recurring problem. Can you restretch it?

Re: stiffen up canvas

This is a great price for canvas pliers:

* When I got a bad dent on a canvas once, I filled a spray bottle with hot water, and misted the back on the problem area. Worked great....you might try hot water.

* Golden makes a GAC 400 acrylic polymer...not sure if it would solve your problem if the canvas is poorly stretched, but you might check it out:

"GAC 400 - Stiffens textile fibers. Dries to a very hard and stiff film. Most useful for priming fabrics (cotton, linen, silk, etc.) when stiffness is desired. May be used as a rabbit skin glue alternative when applied directly to raw canvas or linen. Allows sculpting and shaping of draped fabrics."

* You could remove the canvas from the stretcher frame, and adhere it to a panel instead.

Good luck!

Re: stiffen up canvas

yea i had thought about removing it and glueing it to a piece of wood

that will be my last option, anyhow i went ahead and soaked the canvas then covered the back with an acyrlic type varnish.. i'll see how it goes.

one thing i know is if it slacks after this i wont be able to dampen the back fibers again.. so restreching or glueing to a panel it will be.
