Sailing boat in Littlehampton harbour
A little sailing boat in Littlehampton harbour - a place I find very inspiring.

Very nice Sandra. Not much detail and the colours are very nicely blended.

I feel like someone could splash the water right out of the picture. Not because of the detail, because of the water feel of the piece.
Nice job!

I love these lovely muted watercolours, and took it to be English before noticing that indeed you are located in England.
I love the 'mood' of this.
I teach 'pen & wash' and so, can see this further defined by adding ink line work or coloured pencil definitions. It's not that your work needs it, it's just another way of working with the sheer delight of using watercolours in this manner.
You've mannaged to put your colours together SO well!
A nice art work, would look so lovely framed and hung, I'm sure.
Regards,
Jillian

Thanks for your comments, Sumafra, Kathy and Jillian. I really appreciate them.
Jillian - I did think about adding ink but decided against because I liked the softness. Many folks in the watercolour forum thought this needed more darks. I think this is a subject that I could do many versions of with different colours and tones.

Oh, mentioning the ink, I didn't mean for you to try it with this, it is lovely and will be lovely matted & framed, as is.
A softer approach is to add coloured pencils in same colours.
As you say, it's a subject that you could do many ways.
And this is lovely!

Jillian

Thanks, Jillian - I may do an line and wash version. I hadn't thought about using coloured pencils with watercolour. Something to think about when I next visit the art supply store.

I think you'd like the result. Do a hard edge in coloured pencil where you'd think of adding an ink line. Use the SAME colour or slightly darker than the painted area. So do it as a line, THEN for magic results shade back into the watercolour area, blending ... darker near your original line, fading off into the watercolour.
I think you'll have fun with doing this. I use this when doing illustrations, it makes the paintings less 'flat', seeming to give another dimension to them. Works particular well with the 'grainy' watercolour paper, so that you can fade off the pencil colouring with a textured feel.
Regards,
Jillian
