Problem with black

I hope someone might have the answer to this. I have some soft black rods that I bought some time ago from a company called Plowden and Thompson. Not sure of the COE but I think it's probably 100. First off I had a problem with pitting - it came out looking like orange peel. I think I was getting it too hot - anyway I seem to have solved this. However, it is now coming out looking like a dull metallic silver. Please does anyone have the answer?

Re: Problem with black

Is the rod shiny black or a raspy coarse feeling black? One is moretti black and the other is moretti silver plum which is intended to turn metallic silver color. Some people have reported that latest moretti shiny black is also turning silvery color too. Usually the silvering ocurrs when you are using too much oxygen in the mix, assuming you are using a torch rather than a hothead.

If you have the latest shiny black, some people are lightly etching beads to remove silver finish. This is a real quick dip into the etching fluid - not to really etch, etch them. Another person found using a stained glass super brite copper patina dunk, help clean the scummy silver finish would remove it from their black bead. Try all three, starting with oxygen regulating first and see if that helps. Good luck

Many thanks Maureen. I'll experiment tomorrow, I think your right it probably is too much oxygen. Made about 60 beads today and I can't get any more in the annealer.

Re: Problem with black

I teach at Plowden and Thompson... haven't worked with the black in quite some time because I am prone to using other glass here in the States.. I will pull some out this week and try to see what the problem is...personally I love the metallic look, loved it before all these silver reduction glasses came on the market... but I think it will have something to do with having your flame too soft... I will TRY to remember to check this out! I'll be back in England, teaching this summer by the way, and will be getting in touch with the Beadmans about dates this coming week also... Kate.
