Canvas question

Hi thereˇˇˇ

Ive got a little question about canvas. You see, I have this, alas, cheap canvas .The size is perfect, but the grain, the texture of it is very rough.I want to do a thinned oil and ink mixed media painting and I would like to know any ways to soften the grain so it admits ink without staining everywhere and allows me uttermost oil ainting detail.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: Canvas question

Sanding between coats of primer will take away a lot of roughness. Coat canvas with primer and let it dry thoroughly and then sand gently. Repeat until you're satisfied with the surface. You may find that the sandpaper rubs back to canvas, especially where there are lumps and bumps in the canvas. The next coat of primer will re-coat these bits (I'm talking acrylic primer btw).

Would acrylic gesso work?

Re: Canvas question

Yes, be ready for lots of sanding and re-coating.
