July Artist of the Month: Alex Janvier

For my turn to present an artist of the month, I decided on an artist that may not be very well known to you: Alex Janvier. I was introduced to his work via a television program that I watched with fascination in my young adult years in the basement of my parents’ home when I should have been studying for a calculus examination one evening. Though I had no serious impulse to create visual art at the time, I regularly doodled to stay awake in university classes, and found Alex Janvier’s work very inspirational. To this day, when I am doodling I am drawn to long flowing curvilinear shapes like the ones he creates.

A Canadian artist, he was inducted into the Order of Canada in 2007, and in 2008 won a Governor General’s Award for distinguished career achievement in the visual arts. He was a member of the Professional National Indian Artists Inc. which was referred to by the press as the Indian Group of Seven. He has had a profound impact on artists, and particularly aboriginal artists, in Canada.

Of Dene Suline and Saulteaux descent, he came from humble beginnings, and was taken from his family and sent to the Blue Quills Indian Residential School at the age of 8. He credits Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee, but also the beadwork and birch bark basketry of his mother and relatives and influences on his art. His art is inspired by a broad range of political, historical, cultural, spiritual, and mythical issues and experiences. I find it endlessly fascinating to try to interpret the forms in his works.

Last year I was in Ottawa and had the opportunity to view one of his most impressive works of art at the Canadian Museum of Civilization: Morning Star. I must have spent a full hour admiring and photographing this 4500 square foot work of art on inside of the dome of the museum. Please forgive the compositions, as you would need a super-wide-angle lens to get the whole work in the frame. As it was, I looked pretty unusual laying on my back in the middle of the floor of the museum shooting the photos below. Check out the previous link for a full dome photograph.

Here are some additional pictures of his smaller works in his website gallery and in a local gallery.

Note: Previous months

January: Kandinsky
February: Marc Chagall
March: Jacob Lawrence
April: Frida Kahlo
May: Damien Hirst
June: Helnwein

Eraethil this dome mural is beautiful! I've never heard of this man and I'm so happy you've brought him to my attention! I've been looking at his website and I'll have to go back and look more later because theres so much to see and its all so moving and engaging. I loved "Coming Home" I sound like I'm his gallery manager!

Yes, he is well known in Canada, and his work has been purchased by pretty much every major Canadian public collection.

I'm really not sure why he hasn't become more well known outside of Canada - his work has certainly developed into a unique and powerful style all his own. I wonder whether it has to do with the perception of "aboriginal art" on the world scene? I don't think of his work as aboriginal art - an unnecessary classification, I'd say.

Addie, I sound like his gallery manager too. Someday I'll have make the effort to try to meet him. The dome is truly awe inspiring, and I hear there are always people standing below staring upward open-mouthed. I think my favorite in his online gallery is "Distinguished Guest".

Quite intriguing work. I especially like his paintings that look like misfiring neurons. I think I've seen his work somewhere...can't put my finger on it, but it does look very familiar.

Oh! Those colors and lines!
Thank you for introducing us to this artist, Rick. I am stymied as to why he is not better known outside of your country.
Beautiful work!

Re: July Artist of the Month: Alex Janvier

I am very glad that a bunch of you are appreciative of this artist's work. Some day I'm going to find a way to afford one of his works...

I just finished reading a book called The Art Of Alex Janvier: His First Thirty Years, 1960-1990. Here are a few quotes from the book and the artist that I found insightful:

Regarding reconnecting with spiritual values:
"...by way of church, and Indian residential schools and through other efforts, you get to believe that Indian things are evil... I became something else and I always knew in the deep hidden part of my mind that something did go astray in my life, and that it resulted from having lost the being that I'm supposed to be."

Regarding his "Apple" series of paintings (Apple implies that someone is red on the outside and white on the inside) and the "apple factory" (the residential school system):
"I think the school made us into almost perfect white little brown kids... They cut our hair short, put lice oil in our hair. It stunk like hell and we had to sleep in that."
"...whatever you saw, you couldn't talk about. Whatever you smelled or tasted, you couldn't talk about, otherwise you were punished..."

And my favorite quote, on losing his position with the Indian Association of Alberta in 1971:
"Honey, I'm home; I'm fired and I'm going to paint the rest of my life."

Love that last quote!
Thanks for introducing us to this fine artist Rick,
and the dome truly IS amazing!
I'd have been flat out on the floor taking pictures too.
I think I favor the painting "The Passage", but they all
have their own special interest.
