Rat River...by Camp Five 9"x 12" oil

Painted this this late afternoon...finishing about 7:30pm...unfortunately a river called the "Rat" river...not the most marketable name.

A beautiful night, and painting was perhaps a way to save self-dignity after not the best day striking balls on the links.

Wow, Larry, this is beautiful! I love the dabs of thicker paint, not scrubbed to death...I see your practicing a brushstroke laid is a brushstroke stayed. It's harder to do than to say. I also love the color harmony. What colors were on your palette? I gotta revisit your link on that. Does the Garett's copal make your paints more spreadable? I haven't tried a medium yet but have been toying with the idea. Anyway, I really love this piece! Lots to learn, too. Thanks!

Re: Rat River...by Camp Five 9"x 12" oil

Thanks Dan...appreciated,

thanks Margie...

My palette tonight was the first option this year that I decided to go with a split-complementary palette.

I made a good pile of blue-green, then my splits were orange and red. My orange was more a yellow-orange. Plus white.. My blue to mix up my blue-green was my Fr Ultramarine Blue...

Spreadable? Hmmm...well, the copal thins it some yes, makes my paint more buttery. Assures the painting will dry fairly quickly and uniformly as well. For me the copal also intensifies the color, deepens darker values...which gives greater power to my limited palette as well...

well...least I may be more consistent!!! Gettin' old stinks...take three ibuprofen and an Aleve now about 20 minutes before teeing off...

Don't really have to do that to paint!

thanks Randy...

Nice one Larry. I love the distance seen in this- great value and chroma control seen in the trees on the right vs. the left.

Love it Larry! The way you have described the sun filtering through the trees and the slight haze is just wonderful!

You've totally captured the evening light through tall pines and spring of the year as well. I guess it does take split complements to accomplish that.
You didn't run out of board.

Re: Rat River...by Camp Five 9"x 12" oil

thanks Gracie...
yeah, I felt the advantage of such a simple palette was to keep on top of the drama as time to finish would press in...plus the split-comp allows a nice project of mood overall...

peace

Larry, if you don't mind my asking, do you mix your paint while doing observations or, kind of, ahead of time?

Spring Light at Camp Five. How's that for a better title? I'm studying the subtle value and color shifts you used to portray the light in the trees. Great touch Larry!!!!!!!!
